My hatch open light has been coming on a (long) while and I am finally sorting that. New latches are running $250 to $300 now so I was motivated to research it and see if it was repairable. Looks like it is.
Inside I found the plastic surround (blue arrow) that closes the microswitch (yellow arrow) all fractured and loose, as well as the return spring (Red arrow). It looks to me like if I epoxy weld it back in the right place (latch, green arrow), and re-attach the spring, I’ll be good. I am thinking the spring goes from the latch plastic surround (blue arrow) to the alloy anchor post (white arrow).
- anyone know precisely where to reattach that surround and the spring?
Who here has been inside a late P80 8628197 9203955 hatch latch? Latchectomy in progress… Topic is solved

Actually, I think I’ve got it.
I found this post at SS where someone did this before and helpfully documented it.
https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/v70 ... st-7907521
I JB welded the spring post piece on that corner of the latch; it fit correctly, and should reliably depress the microswitch lever once assembled. We’ll let that set-up overnight and then hopefully I’ll be good, and not out $250 for this silly issue.

You got it figured out! Excellent. I think Abscate might have done an autopsy on a hatch latch a while ago.
Thanks for sharing!

I’ve searched this obsessively (for months) but somehow didn’t get that linked thread to show up. I think I’ve got it sorted for the few pence of a little bit o’ JB Weld from the drawer. It’s cured by now and I’ll put it back later today.abscate wrote: ↑07 Jul 2024, 02:10 I have done a couple of these on Elizabeth the99. I’ve noted the same crazy inflation on the part. When the light first showed, I could have bought a new assembly for $170. Now it’s $250. Let’s cross fingers and hope it’s fixed for nothing.

From the photos in your link I'm wondering if the rear hatch lock assembly for the 2002 V70 XC is similar with the P80. Reason for asking is due to the battery not being in good shape initially I couldn't unlock the hatch so had to removed the battery from the back seat. Which of the mechanisms can I perhaps rig a hook or zip tie to protrude out of the carpeted hatch cover, via a slit so I can manually pull to unlock the assembly allowing opening with the rear handle?
.
Blessings,

Success.
Re-attaching that tab as pictured fixed the warning light, it trips the microswitch correctly now.
The latch hook return spring goes to that tab. All back together and working well. Now. This was a much easier fix than I anticipated. If you do this repair one thing I would suggest is to use proper JB Weld and not a cheaper epoxy - there is a difference. I keep the HF cheap stuff around for small tasks, but not something like this where I am loathe to want to go back in and do it again.
Here’s the complete assembly.

Part number search should work…
This part 8628197 is for a two stage locking tailgate latch found on late 1998 and bastard P80s
2 The part number 9203955 is used on non-two stage locks - no more information known on that here.

Possibly wrong, but I asked about the single stage locking and was told by an very experienced Volvo parts person it was not an option in North America. I am not convinced. Were cars without fobs single stage, or do you have to unlock the driver's door twice?
