5W-30 is too thin. the oil won't stay in the cam/valve region long enough. I'm running 10w-60 synthetic and it helps the engine stay calm and quiet. It's also excellent for track day use.
I tried 0W-40 synth, 5W-40 semi synth and 10w-40 dino in various p80ies, and 10W-60 is by far the best.

Being it's summer a 20W50 would be okay as the goal is too put a thicker oil to see if the noise goes away. I've never considered a 10W60. I believe some of the Europeans like BMW use it. Will have to weigh the cost and see if it's something that will work for a few of the older cars.

20W-50 was the staple of Volvos like 120,s, 140,s and even 240's I had in Europe. It was also the most commonly used oil on most European cars, especially British back in 1960's-80's.

I would agree that going with a thicker oil even for a short while to see if you can pump the system back up. Longer term be aware of old oil seals and thicker oil.

Good Luck!

My Indie who specializes in Jags, Porsches and anything that's fast loves 10w-60 and says he hasn't had any problems so far.

What is the problem of the old oil seals an thick oil, Neil?
0w-40 caused oil leaks on both of my B5234T5s, 10W-40 stopped them.

Higher crank case pressure and thicker oil pushing on old seals. May be ok, but just be cautious! If your PCV system is not clean, and partially blocked, having thicker oil trying to get through a partial blockage could cause a huge rise in pressure in the crankcase. I like the idea of running thicker oil in older engines as you suggest. But be aware, this medication may cause unintended side affects!

Update. Drained the oil and did an oil change. My magnetic oil pan plug was covered in small metal shavings. The Mann oil filter is really heavy so I know it also caught a lot of debris. The drained oil left golden color, non-magnetic particles on my draining felt. Car still runs but sounds like a bag of rocks. I’m sure there’s engine damage. Any ideas on what the particles are? Cylinder walls? Something else? The best this car can be is a short distance point A to point B vehicle without an engine tear down and rebuild.

Damn ! Hate to say it, but that gold color material is probably bearings. It must have been driven a bit without oil.
Junkyard engine would not be too much $$$.

Is it a higher clickity clack noise, or a deep KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK?

 :(

Doe the oil level/pressure light not work, or did your friend just choose to ignore it? Sorry for the loss of the engine. Sounds like as suggested it is bearing material.
