06 XC70 - A strange thing happened......!

Post by scot850 »

So today I got some time to finally get around to swapping the failed lower torque mount on the XC70. On a P80 it is a 10 minute job, but due to the engine undertray on the XC, it meant jacking the car up enough to get me and my belly under the car to get the tray off! :o

Straight forward and just used jack stands as it was chucking down rain outside at the time so didn't want to take a car outside to give room to use the hoist.

Jacked passenger side up so tie was about 2" off the ground, and put a jack stand under the front sub-frame. Repeated for LHS.

Removed the undertray, and swapped the lower torque mount, retorqued it and refitted the undertray.

The decided to jack the rear LHS up in the air to allow access to the muffler join by the rear muffler just inward of the LHR tire.

Wire brushed the bolt and soaked with PB blaster in preparation for a new clamp arriving.

Dropped the car back onto the ground and called our son to move his car so we could settle the suspension. He climbed in and tried to start the car but it just churned over and no attempt to start. Engine check light came on. I opened the hood again and checked nothing obvious was loose as it sounded like no spark possibly. I then asked him to try again and it churned again. On the third attempt it coughed into life and ran normally. Check light was off and car was happy.

Switched car off and it restarted immediately.

Is there any form of anti-tilt device other than the roll-over valve that can cause maybe a cut to the spark?

Hi Scott,

It almost sounds like the engine was a little flooded? I know that can happen to a P80 when you don't run the engine up to temp and especially when you do this a few times.
But I am not certain if that can happen to a P2 in a similar way.

Good point. It was only run for a very short time to move it to a flat section of the garage (there is a ramp between the old and new garage and it was partially on that when parked). Didn't consider this but it is one of the reasons I don't normally run the cars if only needing to move short distances. Thanks for the pointer. What ever it was, it now seems to have cleared.

I have jacked up the car with just left wheels on the ground, just right, just rear and just front, and have not had this happen afterward. I have however, had a few random times when that car would be hard to start.

I think, with the benefit of hindsight, the car had been sitting for a while and my son started it and it barely ran for any time. I think it got flooded possibly as it has been fine since. It has been sitting for about a week and my wife took it out for a run today and all was well.
