How to fix damaged ABS wiring?

Post by erikv11 »

96 850 NA

Wiring to the ABS sensor on passenger side was damaged during suspension/steering work. Now that corner reads low resistance, I think it was like 400 ohms, or anyway I remember it reads under half of what it should read. Fiddling with the connector including cleaning etc, has not helped so I think the wiring itself is damaged. The other three sensors all read within spec, above 1k ohms. ABS and TRACS lights are on since this happened, of course.

How to best fix this problem, any ideas?

In this setup the wiring unplugs at the sensor, you can't order new wiring. Can I run new wires there and if so what should I use? Do I have to break down and use the soldering iron (talk me off the ledge)?

If I had to do it again I would Source another connector at the sensor end and any 20-24 gage wire with a good sheath. Make a new section with a heavy heat shrink at the connector end and fit the other side 8n as far I to the firewall as you can.

You have to solder it on both ends. It is what it is.

Those wires are tough to solder and hold as they need to flex with wheel steering. I must have soldered by rear, with just suspension travel three or four times before I finally broke into the kids college fund and bought a new rear harness (1999, $100 bucks)

Maybe cut one out of a donor and make the solder up high near the ABS module? I think the wire on the -1998 hard connects to the ABS module, unlike the 1999-

I soldered mine and that wasn't ok.
I ended up buying used wiring and just crimping on bullet terminals(male & female) and heat shrunk them.

Connections are high near firewall.

3 years later and everything ok.

Nice “ no tool” junkyard part, except for snippers for the wire.

That's basically what I'm looking for yes! Cut the wiring as far back to the ABS as possible.

So you're needing the connector that this plugs into plus as much wiring as you can get going back to the module? https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/prod ... 42043.html
