Does anyone know what this part is called?

Post by monarchdad »

Hello, I am looking for the name of this part on the top of the transmission on my 01 V70 XC. What I am looking for is the little valve or something like that on top of the transmission with the yellow top that is in between the lower radiator hose and that large wire loom.

Also if you know what it's function of this thing is and if the transmission can operate with it broken off.

All information is greatly appreciated, thanks so much everyone.

I believe you are asking about the transmission dip stick. It has a round, yellow cap and is held down by a metal arm from the side. I would not drive the car if it is missing, because of the risk of ingesting dirt. I would also find some way to cover it while the car is parked so dirt will not fall in.

No, it's not the dipstick. The dipstick does have a yellow cap but it is a bit more towards the front of the car and down lower. This thing is very close to where the starter attaches on to the transmission. Right next to the the lower radiator hose as shown in the photo. Again, this is on a 01 V70XC turbo model.

Is that where the dipstick is on an early P2? The 5 speed auto for the last P80's is further forward nearer where the 4 speed auto is on the P80's. Interesting is it is as I have never seen one there. You are always learning!!

Sorry, was just posting this when your reply came in. It may be a breather valve, but I'm not sure.

Neil.

Check this link and look at parts #'s on the drawing, #27/#28/#29:

It is the breather. However, it does look like the yellow dipstick!

The scale of the photo fooled me. I just looked at my 2001 V70 T5. It is a breather. The yellow cap has a little play to move up and down.
Sorry to mislead.

Thankyou scot850 and volvolugnut.

And as a word of advice, watch out for this thing if you ever change your starter. I got careless positioning my ratchet extension under the wire loom & radiator hose to remove the starter bolts and broke this darn thing!
