2010 xc90 AC engine noise 165K

Post by raquette »

developed an engine noise. I was thinking this could be an idler bearing but sounds deeper inside the engine. replaced water pump serpentine and idler wheels and tensioner about 20k ago.

any ideas of what is causing this?

May be easiest to find source of noise with a mechanic stethoscope.

Have you cycled the AC compressor to see if the noise changes?
.
OR?

I've narrowed it down to bad serpentine belt tensioner bearing or noise from the coupler that drives the alternator housing. used a stéthoscope to determine this.

as suggested will remove the serpentine belt to isolate the belt tensioner.

removed the belt tensioner, started the engine with no load on the coupler drive except the alternator and the noise is now gone. the tensioner bearing is not terrible by the spin test.

I saw abscape suggested isolating the tensioner on another forum. Thank you!

napa has the tensioner, pulley and auxiliary idler part so will complete the repair tomorrow.

Please take a few photos as my 2012 XC90 is making a little noise in the area also. Haven't own it very long nor driven it much, besides a lack of familiarity with the 3.2 at this time, thanks.

well replaced the tensioner and idler pulley, and the engine noise returned. the stéthoscope does not reveal noise from the water pump or power steering.

stumped at the moment...
