I popped open my NAPA WIX Gold filter element and was pleased to see a new o-ring.
There was none on my canister, hmm.
I put the new one on and noticed there is a rubber ring in a groove of the canister, but it’s not round, and not smashed down - it’s clearly a rectangular section shape so that it’s flat and smooth on the outside. I thought, huh, do they both go on there? (I am the oil changer, so it’s my fault if it’s missing)
So I placed the o-ring down at the “shelf” at the bottom of the thread area and it screwed right in snug.

That's not correct, your first picture the flattened seal needs to be removed and the new seal goes into the groove the old seal was in. Only one seal should be fitted

Correct, for what its worth once you have the new o-ring in the proper groove you can probably go a dozen oil changes without fitting a new one in, I usually throw the new one out after inspecting the old one. I use Volvo filters and they always come with a new ring.

VERY interesting. So that seemingly perfect square ring is a mashed o-ring? It's so nice and square, like it was made that way. So that groove is where the new one goes?
I have screwed up. Wonder how much oil I'll dump out pulling it back off? At least it sits vertical.

You can see where I thought this looked like a manufactured, square profile "O" ring. Fits perfectly in the rectangular recess.

Maybe a different brand or incorrect seal was supplied at one point? That is definitely a rectangular section seal.
