2007 Volvo XC 90 Clunking Front Drivers Side

Post by VolvoS402006 »

I am hoping someone else may had experience this and can share what they found. I have a 07 XC 90 3.2 FWD auto that is making a clunking sound right under the front drivers side. I have looked under the car and I really can not see anything obvious. The CV looks ok shock isn't loose and the control arm seems tight. I imagine this all could look different when the car is moving. Has anyone experienced something similar? I would really appreciate any similar experiences. :D

Check the control arms with a pry bar. Visually may look ok but may have a lot of movement. If original they are likely shot.

Is it a rotational clunk, occurs when you start from a stop, or over bumps.

Some things to consider:
  • Lower Control Arm rearward bushing if it happens going over a bump, when turning, or when braking
  • Sway bar end link if going over a bump on either side
  • Rotational could mean the CV
  • If starting from a stop, could also be axle bolt, engine mount
Possibly other things. More description helps, such as when the clunk happens, if it's a fluttering noise, just a clunk, on or off the throttle, etc.
