Re: What did you do on your P1 Volvo today?

Been texting back and forward with the owner all week. He is finishing off papers for the year end at University, so is panicking as the car died on him while driving in a parking lot. He booked it in at a Canadian Tire shop where a friend works and the head mechanic had a look at it. I told him not to hold out on them fixing the issue, and true to form, the best they could get to was they think there is a fault with the ECU causing the electrical issues and the alternator failures.

He is now going to book it in with Volvo in the hope they can figure out the issue and find a fix. We now know the 'European' repair shop had not worked on Volvo's (that fitted the engine from the 08 C30 T5). They found the wiring 'difficult' and the previous owner thought they did something with the ECU. So now we are no further forward as we don't know if the issue is a wiring issue, alternator issue, or ECU problem or any combination or all of them.

I have found an 07 C70 T5 being parted out, but again, I don't now if the ECU for an FWD and AWD are compatible.

I will contact Volvo and see if they can find what the differences are between a B5254T3 and T7 so we can hopefully figure out what we have to do to fix this cluster mess!

Oh the joy!

I was chasing the “slow down /shift up” on my daughters s40 ‘05. Found plug wells 1 & 2 half full of fresh oil from spilling. Cleans it all up and I think problem solved. Now on to the OWS missing signal

Owner of the V50 T5 AWD finally called to ask if I could make some time to fit the 4 rubber mounts for his muffler system that have been on my shelf in the garage for about 5-6 weeks. He arrives, got the car on the hoist and with my new Lisle rubber mount puller it was quick to do. Love it when a simple tool works so well. A forked leg fits behind the rubber mount and then the other side of the 'scissor' has a pointed finger that rests on the end of the mount and allows the fork to pull against that and the mount off. It would have been easier yet if Volvo didn't have their usual stupid access issues. Anyway job done and some planning made for more work in the fall when he gets back from a long vacation.

You wrestle those off for years with screwdrivers and channelock (tm) pliers and then you buy that tool and wonder why you waited so long. Lisle makes a good one.

Did I spell Channelock correctly,Bdub?

What did I do?

I bought one!

A 2010 V50 with only 103K miles, and pretty much "mint" condition. Its a wagon, and its low miles, clearly sat in a garage most of the time, BUT:

1 ) After a 240 wagon, and a v70 wagon, the v50 feels... cramped. Like a rice-burner.

2 ) The rear-view mirror is an experience I can only call "tunnel vision", as is the rear cargo bay door window.

3 ) I can't put my own stereo in the "waterfall" center console, and I have to get a bluetooth adapter to plug into the aux port (or the back of the CD player/head unit) as the "bluetooth" on this beast is "phone calls only". What were they thinking? It was 2010! There's also no good place to mount a cellphone, but "attachmount.com" has a decent-looking base to which I can mount my rotating mount from the v70. Yes, it makes one poke a finger behind it to get at the emergency flasher, But I can rig a duplicate pushbutton for that in parallel in the empty space where the "blind spot information system" would otherwise go.

4 ) The key fobs have the plastic "keyless entry" keyfob and key that are sure to rip pants pockets and poke me in the thigh, but there is a "dumb switch" that can stay in the ignition switch, so perhaps I can repackage the keyfob into a smooth case just like the v70 had. But SERIOUSLY Volvo, when you say "Keyless Entry", and then require me to carry around this giant comic-book KEY, what part of "Keyless" was unclear to your tiny little Swedish-Chef minds? Just LOOK at this refugee from a Rube Goldberg convention:

5 ) The back cargo bay area is... wonky. It does not lie firm and flat like the v70, there are these cheap carboard/fiberboard covered in carpet flaps that fold down over the gap between the fold-down seats and the full-time trunk surface, and you have to pull out the rear headrests and stow them in the fold-down seat, where they take up what would be cargo space. At least the car came with a full set of weathertech mats all around.

6 ) Those headrests when in place on back seats for passengers? They block MORE of the rear view.

7 ) The back seat area is fine if one's friends are exclusively members of the cast of the "Wizard of Oz", but normal non-munchkin humans will find the back seat about as inviting as going to school open house and sitting at the desk of a 3rd grader.

8 ) At least it is the same 5-cylinder 2.4 block that the v70 has, so that much is familiar. But look at that intake manifold - it's PLASTIC? Yes, PLASTIC!! Is the exhaust manifold ALSO plastic?

9 ) It has a spoiler on the back, so think of all the money and heartache I have saved by NOT buying any of those aging money-pit V70Rs that change hands every 8 months like clockwork! ;)

10 ) It looks... stumpy and fat where the v70 looks low-slung and lean next to all the Soccer-Mom SUVs. How does a smaller car look "fat"? I dunno, I guess 'cause it is shorter overall? It feels... cramped inside as compared to the wider at the roof v70. From the outside it looks... bulging, like a v70 trying to fit into a size 2 dress, and straining at the seams.

But, it is a wagon, it had one owner and amazingly low miles, and it got all the service from a stealership, so it is the rational choice in a land of gypsies, tramps, lairs, and thieves selling used cars.

My 2004 v70 has been loved and driven to death, but it is no longer economically viable as anything other than an organ donor. At 400K+, the steering rack leaks like a sieve, the tranny is kicking at times in heavy stop/go traffic, the O2 sensor is complaining about the cat being inefficient. Annoying, as I recently put on new front struts and new brake rotors all around on her. If anyone needs a part, I've got one, and it is a good one, except for the above-noted exceptions.

Jeez... am I the only v50 owner reading Matthews any more? Has YouTube made forum sites "obsolete" for the kids?

Well, here's what I did today - NADA!

Got all the little issues addressed, the last of them yesterday, so I have a happy "No DTCs" Volvo, as is my habit.

2008 C30 T5 2.0 M66 assigned to my Son and soon to be his (Title). Maybe going on 6th year of ownership. I like the drive, steering, handling and overall ride but don't like the seating position nor getting in and out as I get older. A little low slung and slight drone at highway speeds due to muffler delete w/ DYI fabricated dual exhaust. The dual exhaust is unequal length with accidental differing size tubing on each side but same size tip. This has created a nice low rumble with gurgles and small pops with light throttle lift in gear.

@ MoVolvos ...

So on the control arm bushings... I have looked at them, and do not like what I see.

The ball joints are riveted to the arms on the LCAs... that seems stupid. Detroit Axel has replacements that DO have bolt-on ball joints, but getting the existing bushings out and new ones in looks like a multi-ton press is needed to get the new bushings in.

How did you accomplish this?

Today, I put eye-shadow on my v50.
Its a subtle effect, but the black ring of weatherstripping around the white inside panel in the headlight just seemed stupid to me, so I popped off the metal clips on the assembly, baked the headlights at 250 for 8 mins, pulled the lens off, removed the plastic piece that needed painting, painted it gloss black, and then (tediously) removed all the butyl rubber adhesive from both lens assembly and headlight body, and replaced it with a new strip of butyl.

Then, pressed together by hand, and baked again for 8 mins at 250, and pressed together some more with warmed butyl, and put the clips back on. Voila - the car looks much more "goth", and the headlights are more in keeping with the blackout tinted windows, tinted taillights, and black electronic "sequencer" turn signals on the mirrors.

Now I need to work on sanding off and repainting all the places where the previous owner used flat white touchup paint on rock dings and such!
