Sadness - 2002 V70 2.4T - Transmission Service Required - is it time to say goodbye?

Post by Jonboy74 »

Please say it ain’t so. I love this car. I really really love this car.

302,205 miles.

I literally just heard a “thunk” as I was driving down the interstate at 60-65 mph, and that message came up on the dash. No other funny noises or behavior until I dropped down from highway speed. It is obviously now in limp mode.

I had the transmission replaced with a Transtar in January of 2013 for $3,800 at 165,610 miles. (The shop attempted to rebuild my original but was unable to.

I have a feeling my Indy shop will tell me it is toast.

How many have recovered successfully from this warning message in the DIM?

In the meantime, I have to get from my current location to home - about 20 miles. Do I limp home or do I call the tow truck?

Sadly,

Jonboy

My 2001 V70 transmission threw multiple Transmission Service Required messages with harsh shifts before I did a series of drains and refills with Mobil 3309 ATF. After 1200 miles all seems OK with smooth shifts and no messages.
Your results may be worse, but don't give up on it yet. But I can't think what might go thunk at highway speeds however.
My car, I would limp home.

Update: I went ahead and limped home, no issues other than acceleration was slow. Once I was up to around 30 mph, no issues. Did get up to 60 at one point. Didn’t do any crazy acceleration, just gradually increasing to be at safe highway speed. No issues with reverse. I did notice that the gear indicator that normally showed a D looked like a hyphen. I presume that means limp mode.

I have seen some threads about this. What was your specific procedure? (Do you have a link to a how to or YouTube video?)

I’m trying to figure out how much time and $$ I am willing to put into it at this point.

Thanks!

I have a 2002 parts car with a good trans in Albany NY, too far to tow, but there it is

Free to you.

I also will be heading down to NC in October. RDU area, and can likely drag stuff

Hey abscate!

Very kind of you. Ended up doing a drain and fill, still threw a code, but am thinking it may be due to a bad signal from the ECM because it said the engine was going 6k RPM… the ECM has had a hard fault for years, so considering sending it to XeMODeX to be refurbished.

I’m not too terribly far from Raleigh. Would love to meet you in person if the timing works out!

Goodnight Elizabeth! 😂
