Rear door stuck - 93 850

Post by coreyb »

The rear passenger door will not open on my 93 850. The outside handle is stuck about halfway out, and the child safe lock is on so no chance of opening it that way. The tutorials I found regarding the doors show removing the door panel--but of course this seems to require having the door open first. Any ideas?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

It is possible to remove the door panel with the door closed, but it takes more time and patience.

To make it easier remove, at least, the seat cushion to get better access.

Awesome, thanks. Got the door panel off, but can't figure out how to open the door at this point.

sounds to me like the linkage simply came off inside the door......usually a simple fix . HOWEVER the inner door panel must come off to do the repair..(this means the door will have to be opened one way or another.)......it is VERY unsafe to drive a car with doors that cannot open properly in case of an accident or an emergency.... for a quick escape

He got the door panel off already. He's dealing with the innards of the door now. I wish I knew. These seem different than my car, but if you're still stumped tomorrow I'll do some digging.

This is what the locking mechanism looks like. Usually it is something wrong in the red square. This part is up at the top, usually hard to see and very hard to work on.

There is a lever with a link rod going down from it which is nearest to the front of the car. This is the place to start as the link rod sometimes comes adrift jamming everything. If that is intact then it is a case of trying every bit, usually blind, until you find what is wrong.

Hope this helps.
