They won't work on pre-2007 cars? That means they work on a 2008-9 S60 which is basically the same car??

My local dealer works on any Volvo that comes in. Volvo also have a tow in program that is free if the dealer repairs the car, no matter the age of Volvo.

Likely PEM issues.

Get a used PEM to test.

Junk yard is about $15-$20.
eBay is about $40-$50.

Indie shop doesn't want to work on it either. Thinks it'd be wasting money because the leaking main seal is a ticking time bomb that's gonna ruin the timing belt and wreck the motor and to fix that is worth more than the car and so fixing anything else is just throwing money down the drain. I appreciate the honesty, but I'm not sending Geoff to the scrapper yet when he's got plenty of life in him. Wife can drive the Chevy, I only have a few miles commute.

A VIDA setup might be in your future for Geoff. The P2 cars have good diagnostics since they are full bore CANBUS cars unlike the last generation. The 2005 is also the second generation, more reliable CANBUS model.

Maybe there is a MVS member in Asheville area, too?

Went ahead and swapped the PEM. Old one looked pretty crusty. Fingers crossed

After a couple days with new PEM, no problems. No CEL, no codes so far. Does take a few more cranks before it fires. But has been consistently starting.

vida should sort that out, it can test the pem and read out fuel pressure.
kinda sounds llike its losing pressure between use.

Well after a couple good weeks we're back to the same old tricks. I'm convinced it's the immobilizer now since I did get a " start prevented" message on one try when the message board was actually working. It had been doing ok after a couple tries but it's getting worse, taking more and more tries before I get it to go. I spent 40 minutes this afternoon fighting with it before giving up and getting a ride home. Guess I'll take a look at the antenna ring, clean the contacts and all that. But it'll probably start on the first crank tomorrow

It can also be your transmitter chip in the key that is failing. Try the antenna ring. Careful removing it as it is fragile at this age. Look around it for sings of cracking. I had one that was cracked right through it.

Cleaning the contacts with electrical cleaner to remove oxide build up is also worth trying.
