Remanufactured steering racks...

Post by AylmerQc »

What's your opinion or/and experience with remanufactured steering racks (rack and pinions)?
I was having a chat with a sales person at a local store (Gatineau, Quebec) that specializes in parts for European cars.
She says she's given up on remanufactured units because they're never done right, mentioned a particular component that usually gets put back in as worn out as it came. In other words, some components get slapped back in without being machined or repaired.
For that reason she said she only orders new racks, and yes they are expensive, so not everyone obviously will spend that kind of money on an old car with a badly worn rack.

Avoid Cardone - anything, not just their racks.
Abscate was working on finding a shop to rebuild his rack, although a chance meeting with a Tesla may have derailed the process.
I think one of his fleet ended up with a Detroit rebuilt unit.

Detroit axle and United rack have supplied me with four racks over the Covid years. All jobs have worked out fine , 3-4 years later.

I have not found a rack rebuilder. My last one in Albany stopped 5 years ago.

I’ll ask at Cars and coffee this month
