I see that you can get a special tool to remove the ECU/TCU from a P2 Volvo. I want to pull these from the 02 XC70 I am working on as there looks like steering oil has got into the case and I am getting ECU error messages.
Is there anyway to do this without the tool? The only tools I can find up here seem to be the CTA tool which Amazon wants to rip me off for around $80 and 2 week delivery.
I need to so the job now, not in 2 weeks. Is there any safe way to do this without the tool?
I'm also going to disconnect the battery to remove this and give it a few minute for systems to discharge before trying to remove them.
Neil.

I recommend a T25 torx (in the shape of an 'r') for getting it inside the rails and a long flat screwdriver with which to push the other rails. Works every time for me and I've had them out at least 10 times.

Guys, as usual you are awesome! All this is great. I may still go ahead on the Amazon one. However, I was talking to my ex-Volvo mechanic buddy and turns out he has one I can borrow! I can pick it up tomorrow which is great.
I have read many mixed reviews on the quality of the aftermarket tools for this, so not sure if the Akozon one is any good as there are no reviews. Ok, I'll buy it and compare with the loner I get and see how they compare. I can always return it if it is bad!
Dikidera, that is a good suggestion too. I might try that as well and cover all the bases. I plan to remove the box and the power steering fluid out the case while it is apart.
Now onto the next issue! New thread help request coming!

Perhaps you can provide links on all your Subjects / Threads done to the car in one post so it's chronological besides work done with the car?

When I did this in the past, when I needed help, no one was responding. What I am trying to do this time is to add links to the break out questions on the time lines. Not ideal, but I'm hoping once I get the engine stuff figured out (or not) the rest will be more plain sailing and will all be in the main thread.
Criticism is fair, but like I said I need to get eyes on specific issues to move this on. Hopefully with a bit of luck I will make some headway on moving on from the engine shortly!
