Instructions for ABS Pump Replacement basic ‘97 850
Finally found the mechanic code reader to look before the year 2000 and it determined I have a “fatal ABS pump failure.” Module is newly rebuilt. Anyone know of any spare DIY videos on how to do this pump job?

Well, it determined you have a DTC for an ABS pump failure, not that you need to replace the ABS pump.
Is the pump wiring visibly damaged? Is the pump fuse intact?
If you actually need to replace the pump, then you have to remove the hydraulic unit. There isn't enough clearance between the hydraulic unit and the strut tower to remove the pump shroud with the hydraulic unit in the car.
If the only problem is shorted wiring, some people have made temporary repairs with the pump still in place.
Do you have the 3-digit ABS-xxx code? Presumably "fatal ABS pump failure" is a correct interpretation, however it doesn't match any of the first party documentation.

I’ll have to get back to the mechanic and will post when and if available. Wiring looks ok and fuses are all good unless there is some sneaky relay hidden somewhere I don’t know about.
I’ve got some hinky electrical on this car, though. Sometimes when I turn on the headlights, the door lock for all doors hits. While my blinkers work perfectly on the outside, the green indicators on the dash don’t. She’s an old gal…

Might be best to resolve these issues first - maybe also affects ABS.
I posted some general instructions here viewtopic.php?p=584607#p584607
If I remember correctly it was not a very difficult job, just lots of things to dismantle, messy and not much space. Does your mechanic need instructions?

I was hoping to do it myself but if even Robert DIY doesn’t do a video on it, it may be above my skill level.
I noticed the used pump I bought on eBay is for AWD and I’m FWD. is it still usable?
Honestly, I’m about to white flag this one. Lol

Use the online Volvo parts web store to compare part numbers and fitment. There wasn’t an awd model in 1997, so that pump has to be an 1998 or later. I think they were the same
