B5244S engine version 2000 V70

Post by Oly850 »

Greetings Gentlemen (Ladies?)

Hi I'm going to take the plunge and buy a project car for myself, it's a 2000 V70 naturally aspirated / auto trans. I'm not terribly excited about driving another automatic but it is what it is.

So it's got a B5244S engine, but this motor came in two versions 142hp and 168hp. How does a guy like me figure out which I've got?

The reason I ask is because of the intake cam VVT. If I look for the cam sensor for this car at FCP Euro or IPD, both only show sensor for the exhaust cam which this model year 2000 car doesn't have.

Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.

2017 XC90 Inscription - My best Volvo by far, but Ex-wife departed & I had to sell. 😕
2001 S80 T6 - rebuilt trans, head gasket, fixed & sold
1997 V70 - kid car, sold
1996 850 GLT - found under bridge, 2 year refurb project, commuter car, kid car, T-Boned - SIPS saved passenger. Totaled.
1997 VW GTI VR6 - exceedingly fast.
1971 VW Type II/231 - it was pointed out by management that the children would be killed in it.

Your auto should be the 5 speed auto not the old 4 speed for the 2000 MY V70 NA. The 148 bhp engine I don't think was sold in North America, but glad to be corrected on that. I believe it is a 10V motor. Yours should be the 20V engine so the 168 bhp motor.

Correct with the intake CVVT solenoid only on the NA, exhaust for the turbo only. If you are needing to replace the intake CVVT, there is a replacement upgrade that requires changing the connector to the solenoid.

This is showing as not currently available. But you can see the part number and the modified harness in this picture:

https://www.volvocarstorontoparts.ca/p/ ... 02696.html

FCP show it as available but only listed for an 01-02 P2 S60/V70 and S80 intake solenoid.

This newer solenoid is better than the original as you can separate the solenoid from the valve to allow cleaning it by removing one small bolt.

Strangely they don't show this as an option for a 00 S70/V70 NA, but the description above does?

I had a look for this part, and you may have more luck getting an affordable unit out of Europe, but can take a while, sometimes they are quicker than my buying from the US to Canada.

The cam sensor is probably identical on the 1999 ( exhaust) and 2000 ( intake). They both sense the same reluctor ring which bolts to either camshaft

Niel had a bit too much Glenfiddich and brought cam solenoids into play ( camshaft reset valve in Volvo language )

Interestingly, that Glenfiddich, also helped me ID they have different part numbers and one is stamped INTAKE and the other EXHAUST. Without knowing different as I did not design the parts, they could have different valving, so I would not assume they are the same and interchangeable. If anyone knows 100% they are the same then that would be good to know!

Solenoids are different. The cam sensors are the same, I think.
