I can change gears without the key being in the ignition, 2007 XC70

Check the shifter lock cable on the left side of the console, you'll need to take the drivers side trim off the console side. there's a yellow connector block on the end of the cable that attaches it to the shifter that may be broken. Excluding that, the column lock may have something broken where this cable goes into it. Normally the key has to go to position 2 in the column lock to move the shifter. You'll have to remove the steering column to access the cable and column lock which is just a few torx T-25's and a flathead screwdriver to see where it attaches on the shifter. It should be pretty easy to find the problem with this trim off.

Might be the shifter knob button as well. It can break and get jammed causing the rod to always be engaged. I would remove the shifter knob and look inside and check the movement. It's very easy to do just don't accidentally punch yourself square in the mouth like I did when I was removing mine.

I'm almost positive the second video in the link will provide enough info on tearing into it and finding the problem. For me the shifter broke and was having a very difficult time going into and out of gears.

On my 2001 V70, the shifter button is permanently depressed by a botched button replacement. Lugnut, if you have the metal rod version, it's possible it's too long and needs shaved down a bit. It's likely hanging up on the plastic, you can open it and look for scouring. Or just live on the edge.
