Here in Finland, they recommended 5W-40

I can also use fuel system cleaner instead of engine flush. I want the engine to last long.

There must be a difference in owners manual specs between US and Euro cars.
From the Volvo Car USA Support website:
"NOTE: SAE 15 W-40 oil should only be used in extreme operating conditions such as trailer towing in sustained ambient temperatures over 104° F (40° C). However, SAE 10W-30 synthetic oil would be a better alternative in such conditions.
SAE 15W-30 should not be used under normal operating conditions.

My understanding of the chart is the grey shaded bar is preferred.
The temps in the vast majority of the States stays between -4 and 104F year round, so 10W-30 goes in everything in my fleet.
Just out of curiosity, how often does the temperature in Finland get above 40C in winter ?

As usually you lose that imaginable money value of the car in insurances, petrol, taxes etc.. just to keep or run it anyway with any car.
Though this is just my philosophy...

That’s a very smart philosophy. Trading a $1000 car with a known history for the $1000 unknown car seldom works well.

Indeed , resale value is not a consideration here.

Every year, any car has $500 in fixed costs and a $300 value as scrap, so you “ lose “ $800 every year just owning it with that bad mentality.

Car's will always cost you money, it is doing the math in where they cost you least. We no longer do much mileage, and I got tired of the never ending dings from our local incompetent drivers. So now I run older cars which we have had for longer periods so we know the history. When the costs start getting too high, then I will replace them.

Good thing there are enough older Volvos around to repurpose for sometime to come, though the good ones are going up in price.

We all know about Volvo's Lifetime transmission fluid and oil ring oil burning issues. 5W40 is a must for turbos. It's not the ambient which is important, it's the hottest surface temp encountered by the oil in the engine. The 15W40 is also very suitable for above freezing.

My 1998 S70 T5 didn't care for the 15W40 one winter when temps drop below freezing. There was just a slight puff of smoke during start up so changed to 5W40. If the engine was not a worn 235K miles the 15W40 would have been okay.

A Volvo engine life of only 100k miles would be a real disappointment.

I’m running 10W-30 synthetic in the fleet. I live in a 12 month climate of 25F-90F Range extreme, and 95% between 35-80F

Upstate was 0-90F and I used the same oil

The ticking noise is not gone after the oil change. It looks clean, with no "shards." I also added additives, but they didn't help.

The engine runs as well as I see it does. I don't spot any problems.

I keep using the 5W/40. Should I change?

Not sure what's the weather like in Finland? Do you have 6 months of above freezing temperature? If so, see if you can get a hold of Swepco for your next oil change. Its formulated to clean and cling like their gear oil and grease. Had excellent results in many cars and in the 98 S70 T5 with 230K miles purchased in 2012 for $500. Quieted the motor, reduced oil consumption and provided more peppiness! Exceptional on dry starts per first video.

I use the Red Tacky because it's an excellent product but Swepco is superior.

During Summer, it is up to 30ºC; in winter, it is up to negative -30ºC.

That's why the shop recommended 5W/40..

I'm also trying to find an oil leak in the car. There are drops here and there, but nothing major.

Cars costing 1k or 10k are not to keep in money wise value as collectibles and in repairs you stop thinking car value to be honest. You either do the job or dont (want pay for the job or make the effort).

BTW for tick tock sounds previous owner of my 850 had forgotten completely o rings from injectors somehow.


I would go with suggested attempt test with cleaning stuff if tapping goes away or mostly less. I would agree with misha and others here this is most likely lifters as i dont hear clonk like MoVolvos shared Rod Knock video example i do and it goes away in higher rpm unlike clonking Rod Knock.

After performing an oil change, I added new oil along with X-1R Engine Treatment and Red Line SI-1 fuel system cleaner. Despite these additions, the "lifter tick" noise is still present. It seems to be originating from the top of the engine.

Try the ATP AT-205 if you think the leak is from a rubberized type of seal. After pouring the entire bottle in the 03 S80 T6 transmission I realized there was no drip the following oil change. That drip always migrates down the underside of the car during driving and never leaves a drop in the driveway so tend to forget about it.

That seal in the After photo seams be have been rejuvenated a bit. Is for the engine also.
