2010 T6 - Alternator Spinning - READ side

Post by volvostud »

2010 XC70 T6 (104k) stopped charging and the dash lit up. Pop the hood and you can see that the alternator is not spinning. engine off and you can spin the couping by hand. From other forums and Youtube it sounds like it is the Alternator Clutch Gear and bolt attached to the READ unit (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... t-30750136). Maybe just the bolt is loose letting the clutch gear spin without engaging the actual READ unit?

So the youtube video -
suggests you need a special tool to replace the clutch gear and bolt. But I can only find a tool that replaces the clutch gear on the alternator side, and not on the READ side.

Anyone have a walk through and tools list for tightening the bolt on the read side? Is that a reasonable assumption for why the couping and alternator CAN turn, just are not turning with the engine on?

I was planning to order intake gaskets, new bolt, and new clutch gear sprocket. Anything else?

The pulley on the READ side is attached by a bolt.

The reason that the pulley gets loose is because the clutch pulley on the Alternator stops working and it backs off the READ pulley

So you will need a Tool and a pulley for the Alternator

Good luck

I have the exact same problem with the bolt being loose on the clutch gear(30750136)

Is their a part number, picture, website, or any information at all about the tool you need to hold the gear while tightening the bolt?

I cant find any information so any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Anyone know if the factory alternator comes with a new pulley?

The Bosch rebuilt AL0870X does come with the overdrive pulley installed (LR2 Mike bought one recently)

Good luck

I am not sure if you understand the failure mode.

1. The Alternator Overdrive Pulley (clutched pulley) seizes up

2. The drive pulley 30750136 on the R.E.A.D. loosens up because of the Alternator loosening the drive pulley instead of FREEWHEELING

Apologies if you already knew all of this.

But you are asking about fixing item #2 but if you don't fix item #1 then you will continue to get the failure mode.

Having said that if you already have all of the parts (i.e. a rebuilt Alternator) and your concern is just holding the drive pulley 30750136 when installing the bolt.

* My recommendation is to just tighten the bolt.

* The R.E.A.D. is connected to the crankshaft so the engine is effectively holding the nut that the bolt is connected to.

* The special tool would be to hold the flywheel so that the engine doesn't spin.

* But I don't this it is needed.

Good luck

Paul
