Almost made a mistake swapping dashes (ECC vs MCC)

Post by Chuck W »

On the wife's GLT, the dash we had installed 7 years ago was starting to look like it was going through the "blip" and disappearing.

I sourced a new dash for it and had forgotten about the fact that the donor I had pulled it from was a MCC car. I had this revelation after I had set the new dash in place and was sticking the ECC module back in and wondered where the 3rd plug was.

Aside from having to REMOVE the dash I had just gotten in place, I needed to figure out the solution, as non-work climate controls are not an option.

The holes for the duct sensors were already located in the replacement dash. They just had plugs in them, so that was easy enough.
The wiring was an other issue.
Now, I could've just swapped the harness from the old dash, but it had a couple issues lurking in it, so I dug into the wiring diagrams.

That third plug (The "C" connector) only has 4 wires going to it. 2 are from the duct sensors and 2 are from the "solar sensor" located up on the dash. That solar sensor shares the location with the anti-theft indicator.

This is basically all of the wiring for that "C" connector.

Which was easy enough to install.

Since the old harness just had the blinker in that location on the dash, with a different connector/terminals, I had to swap the sensor from the old dash.

I just spliced the wires for the anti-theft light, as it wasn't worth pulling them out all the way back to their source on both harnesses.

After that, I was able to properly wrap up the dash installation.

There is a dash swap in my future, I have to take a harder look at the donor. Glad you shared this adventure with us.

Thank you, Chuck!
Now I know that the dash out of my 95 parts car is the one I'll have to use.

Well, in my instance, both cars (ours and the donor) were '97 MY cars. It was actually the cosmetic twin to her car, save for the MCC.
