Spent most of the afternoon helping a friend and fellow P80 owner of a 99 V70 GLT replace the failing hatch latch.
Again the stash came into it's own by having a P80 2-stage hatch latch with the internal hatch release handle. I got that from a junkyard maybe 10+ years ago when I planned to convert the R from a 5 to 7 seater with the addition of a 3rd row seat kit I had. Decided against it as it was not original to the car and the kids were too large to use it, so sold the seat kit, but did not get rid of the latch.
Took a bit of figuring out how it installed, especially the internal handle mechanism. But got there in the end and it now works as it should.
Also figured out the internal light issue is down to a bad LHR door latch assembly, and the rear wiper motor was toast (12V was getting to it).
Finally did the winter tire swap as the forecast is for a cold day with temps around 0C or below with rain and later up to 2" of snow.
Tomorrow, if I can get access to it for 30mins, I hope to try to re-sync the Viper fob that is not working.
Neil.

Well, last night when my ex-Volvo mechanic dropped by it was snowing. After a long chat and finding some good prop-shaft bolts (he always teases me about why I keep so many Volvo bolts.......!) he asked me again what I am doing with the set of Volans I have with winter tires on? I won't use these as the R is now garaged over winter. He has been asking me the same question for about 4 years since I bought the rims. Originally I had planned to have them re-finished and use them on the R. But now I still only need 2 sets of rims, the summers and the winter storage rims. Both have been refinished, so why pay for another set to be done?
That was the final twist my arm needed so they are finally going to a new home where they will be used.
Almost brought a tear to my eyes!
The price I got for them was fair and quickly overcame the pain!
Neil.

Tried to solve the clunking in the rear suspension today. Re-mounting the lower spring retainer got most of it, but it's still there if I go over speed bumps roughly. I wonder if my current one is worn or if there's something that can be fixed by proper installation

Was playing with trip computer of 850 again and i think even though Volvo doesnt admit on 850 models.. you can actually "adjust" when fuel light turns on somewhat. Though i think its not so nice as on 70 series.

On my black wagon, finally made the switch from LiquiMoly 1100 ATF to their 1200 ATF after starting to feel some excessive clunking in the transmission. Also replaced the firewall, top torque mount, and bottom transmission torque mount. Now I feel like a nincompoop for using the wrong ATF, but I'm telling myself it was better than the 26 year old fluid that was in there. I had done three drain and fills with the 1100 ATF.
I also spilled a bendy-spout funnel's worth of the fluid all over the top and front of my engine when someone jump-scared me in the garage and I knocked the funnel over, woops.
Also changed my fuel filter. Based on the Bosch date code, it was original to the car, 188k miles. I will post pictures when I get some WIFI access, and I have yet to retest the fuel pressure.
On the white wagon, finally got the power steering lines mounted into the junkyard-pulled subframe bracket. No idea why someone decided to remove and lose the original one. I used two rubber-insulated cable clamps to hold the lines in place as that piece had gone AWOL from the JY car too.
On the blue wagon that's been spending the better part of a year hibernating, I got the cylinder head back from the machine shop, new stem seals, valves ground. Exhaust were only holding pressure at 8 (psi I think he said) while the spec was 20. Head passed pressure tests, no machining needed, no warping. Problem is he didn't clean the head, and he said that putting it in the cleaning bath would ruin the stem seals and there was a potential to tear them taking them back out. Last time I brought him a head it came back clean, I figured it was part of the service.

Ooof. You clean it before putting the stem seals on of course. They should come back like Madonna, shiner and new

I figured that's what would have been done. I'm going to have to soda blast it, or soak it in a level of simple green that wont affect the stem seals. Kind of disappointing after not seeing the head for around a year to get it back dirty with bits of anaerobic sealer no doubt still present.
