92 740T stalls when warmed up. Is it fuel related?

Post by maxnix »

My 92 740T has a stalling issue. It happens when it is warmed up usually within 10 miles of my drive, while idling or coasting when the engine is not under load, it has been getting more frequent. The car will restart after about 20 minutes and drive fine.

The previous time it occurred the check engine light came on, and I got a 1-4-4 code from the diagnostics. So I replaced the fuel pump relay. Previously, I also replaced the crank position sensor, the ignition module and the radio suppression relay.

This weekend it happened again. I started after a short rest but had very little power, I made it the few miles I had to go to my driveway and when I got out and looked under the car I could see the film fluid undercoat was melting where it was close to the exhaust. This made me think it may be getting starved for fuel and was running too lean? A few hours later It fired right up and I drove it a mile and it seems pretty normal so Im hoping I didn't burn any valves!

Any thoughts on were I should be looking?
I think Im going to replace the fuel filter, plugs and wires, because they probably should be done regardless.

Thanks for reading this long message!

Test the water temp sensor and clean the MAF sensor. Check the electrical connectors for both. If temperature is wrong or air flow wrong, fuel will not be supplied correctly.
Maybe remove and inspect the air intake tube between MAF and throttle. These and develop a hole and leak air (lean).

Thanks, good to have more stuff to look for! I have not checked the MAF or WTS.
