steady stream of coolant coming from area around trans cooler

i have a steady stream of coolant leaking down the front of the block - i can't see it coming out of the thermostat housing but it's either that or the trans cooler - the thermostat is much more likely to leak right? how would I test it to see where exactly its coming from without the intake on? the bottom of the upper radiator hose seems dry
