Cold start problem 850

Hi,

I recently bought a Volvo 850 from 1996. The car has a LPG installation with a switch to switch between gas and LPG. Because the weather is getting colder I am starting to notice a problem in starting my car in the morning. It takes about 5-10 seconds to crank, once it started up. The LPG/Gas switch is turned off. When I drive for a couple minutes the switch goes back on and the car will die on me. In warmer weathers I have 0 issues.

I have noticed a drop on the battery over night. But even though the battery drops, in warm weathers it has nog problem only in colder weather. Does anyone have a idea what this could be? The alarm system and interior lights do not work.

Precious few of us in the US run LPG, so there may not be much we can add there. A suggestion would be to look at the basic systems for cold start, including the engine coolant sensor. A vacuum leak could cause some driveability issues, and the idle air controller might need serviced.

If your battery is losing charge overnight, then there is something causing a current draw, so something is pulling power even when the car is switched off.

Easiest way to try to track this down is a cheap electrical multi-tester. Disconnect the -ve battery cable from the battery and connect the +ve lead to the -ve side of the battery and the -ve lead to the -ve battery lead. Set the tester to milliamps. A good 850 will only draw around 10-12 mA. If it draws more than that then carry on with info below. During this testing do not open cars doors or try to turn the ignition on. It will fry the tester. You can tape the leads to each item mentioned to hold it in place to leave your hands free.

Then remove each fuse from the fuse box in turn while watching the meter for any drop in current draw. If you get a drop with one any fuse make a note of the circuit. Then is is a case of finding what is on that circuit and disconnecting each item watching for the current to drop.

Thanks for the responses! I have already checked the drain. Nothing is really draining it down except the alarm. But very little. The car starts perfect if I remove the 2 fuses of my LPG system. When I connect them the car has problems starting…I will go to a mechanic soon to figure it out.
