parasitic current drain (2002 S60)

Post by ametsgt »

I have about a 1.6 amp drain. I have found if I pull fuse 32 - central electronic module, ECPS, courtesy lamps, glove box lamp AND fuse 33 - fuel pump it goes away. the fuel pump fuse alone is about .3 amps. I can replace the fuel pump fuse and show no drain until i reinstall the other fuse.

Now what?

Check alarm siren module (hidden behind pass. headlight). Its battery leaks over PCB, causes corrosion, siren first start to drain the main battery, then it disturbs LIN bus enough to stop sunroof operation.

Pull fuse 38 and see if the current draw drops. As Vtl mentions the siren alarm circuit board can be damaged by battery leakage and the siren module power is supplied through fuse 38 and fuse 32 supplies the 12V to fuse 38.

The reason you see no current draw when replacing the fuel pump fuse is due to the CEM fuse still being out; the CEM activates the fuel pump relay, once the CEM fuse is put back in the fuel pump relay turns on this starts the fuel pump so you're likely seeing some additional current draw from the CEM driving the relay coil. You may also be looking at current draw when the CEM is more active when driving the extended D1 power relay. I know in my car with the driver door open it takes longer for the CEM to shut down the extended D1 power and I can tell this by the climate module fan still running and eventually turning off.

Check the glove box light switch. Sometimes they stick and the glove box light stays on when it is closed.
You can check by pulling the glove box light bulb and see if the parasitic current drops.

04 S60. Massive drain and consistently having to jump start car. Tested draw and found 32 was pulling. Pulled the fuse and problem remained. Thanks to firstvolvo, I pulled the 38 fuse for the alarm siren and the problem went away. Thank you for all the info and helping me diagnose the problem. Hope to help others in the future.

This is becoming an issue with these alarms. Hopefully someone will have time to show how to remove them and replace the battery before it becomes an issue (just like we should do with out smoke detectors...........).
