Hello. I'm going to look at a 1992 245 wagon on Wednesday. On paper, it appears to need nothing. I am going to take it in for a pre purchase inspection. The only stated issue is that the seat heaters do not work.
What else should I be looking at or asking about?
156,000 miles
Thank you all in advance for any advice to a newbie brick owner.

245.
Barely broken in.
Win!
<EDIT> Ohio.. look for rust underneath - floors, suspension mounting points, springs, strut towers, bottom of tailgate. Odd tire wear? Pulls this way or that? Braking smooth, pulsing rotors? Any shaking at speed? Wheel bearing noise?
Lugnut will have a good list when he sees this.

Plus 1 with BB's comments. Some get rust under the battery tray and spare tire well, those sins can be well hidden.Hophead wrote: ↑16 Nov 2024, 07:30 Hello. If you do buy the car replace the fuel pump relay immediately, Blue Box Volvo or Febi/Meyle only. Put the old one in the glove box. Ask How I know.
And of course nothing URO, ever.

Oh yeah, the half-moon spare tire well.
Not many miles, but a lot of years on all the hoses, rubber parts, and seals. Any dribbling oil around the engine, or caked oil on the bottom south of the engine and trans?

See all of above.
New items to check:
I assume it has auto trans. Check for smooth operation of the overdrive including the push button manual on/off switch operation.
Check for leak at rear of transmission case. Seal and bushing gets loose.
Check for any crumbling wire insulation - at headlights and top of engine.
Test every electrical device. Check fan speed control twice.
Get any and all documents and manuals available with the car.
Check the wires from the body to the tailgate at the hinges. They flex and break.
Try to find the sticker showing the last timing belt change. But don't worry too much the valves do not hit pistons.
Try to look under the carpet for hidden floor rust.
Check that speedometer AND odometer actual work.
Look for any nasty wiring repairs under hood and under dash.
Considering this car is in Ohio, look very hard for rust.
Compare wear on seats, pedals, and steering wheel to stated mileage. Do they match?
Other than rust, the other things can be repaired and may be worth spending money if mileage is accurate.
