ECC-418 and ECC-419 94' 850

Post by xnRS »

So, for some reason my blower fan doesn't work correctly.

I've tried 2 regulators. One from my car throws 4-1-8 code, and spins blower motor at half of it speed, adjusting speed isn't doing anything. Also, it had a leaked capacitor, but it seems that it didn't damage the board. I've recaped the regulator, no changes.

Then I have installed another regulator from S70, inside of it looks fine, but it throws me 4-1-9 code and stops the fan imdieatly.

I've checked my ECC unit on other car, blower motor adjusting works fine on it.

Also I've diassembled Blower motor and regreased it. The error is thrown even without the blower motor.

So, few hours ago I've went with VADIS ECC-418 procedures. It asked me to check voltage on B12 pin, it should variable between 6-8 volts. Voltage in my case was 3.8 volts all time. Then it asked me to check short between B12 and A1(Battery voltage, I guess) on regulator. And it is shorted. But, if i disconnect connector B from ECC, the short is gone.

I've also checked continuity of all wires from ECC to Regulator, from battery to regulator and from regulator to fan, all look fine.

So anyone had same issue?

upd:

I guess i know what's the problem

Turns out, there are 3 p/n of ECC Regulator

Volvo 9144354 850 Sedan Chassis 0-223918 Wagon chassis 0-124634(mine is 061399)
Volvo 9134932 850 Sedan Chassis 223919 and onwards Wagon chassis 124635 and onwards
Volvo 9166694 70 Series any

So, I've got one from S70, and... I think it might not fit! I will comeback with results, after I'll install another 850 regulator

As you have figured out the S70 98 does not list as a useable part number for your 850. Also you know the part is no longer available for the 9134932 part number or the 9144354. There is this thread I found which says these 2 are not compatible but the reasoning the writer used is not definitive as he may have had other issues. Some websites list the 9134932 as for 92-97 850. So I am not sure.

Finding one for a 94 is going to be tough. We have not had a 93-94 in the junkyards around here for a long time. Last one had MCC system not ECC. Sorry, but you will just have to see if you can find a used one.

Good Luck!

So with some luck I've found one with the same P/N, but, it's condition is kinda questionable, same place, same leaky cap. Also it always spins blower motor, even if ignition is off. I'll try to find if 9134932 works for me.

I've found 6811581. Speed adjusting now works normal

P.S My personal recomendation for every 850 owner with ECC: Check the condition of your regulator, and change 10uf 25v caps with polymer ones(or just new electrolytic japanese ones, but keep in mind - polymer are far superior in any way possible, except for price and size maybe) and change thermal paste on transistor(Arctic MX-4 will do a good job).

These are 3 diffrent regulators. Each one of them have same 10uf 25v failed caps, which have leaked on the board and have caused corrosion. 2 out of 3 regulators have failed(No speed adjustment on first one and permanent work of fan on the second one).

Didn't see others leak yet. They aren't always green, I guess it was on very first version of the board. On the next revision, 10uf 25v cap is colored black, and if I'm not mistaken, only one remained on board, other one was replaced with 1uf 50v one. Don't know anything about last revision, didn't saw them yet. S70 Regulator doesn't even have this capacitor
