Question regarding glove test for PCV system, -97 850

Post by DennisCA »

I replaced most of the PCV system on my car a few months ago but I realized I never tried the glove test. I did so just out of curiosity and I am wondering what should happen when you engage the throttle? What happens for me is that there is no inflation when idling, but when I pull on the throttle cable to rev the engine, the glove seems to inflate a bit, then it sort of stops as if it catches up. It doesn't want to suck the glove in as if there's a vacuum, but it doesn't inflate the glove like a balloon either.

Just wondering if that's the proper behavior or if my system is still clogged, or has a vacuum leak perhaps.

I decided to make a video of it, perhaps it's not acting entirely like I described in the video, mostly the inflation happens when you rev though and then when you let it go, it sucks it back down.

This a pass or a fail?

When you serviced your PCV system did you replace all the parts?

Did you ensure that the drains into the block from the tank/separator were properly clean?

Does your system still have the flame trap in it? It is that round plastic disc with a bunch of holes in it that is in the pipework near the back of the throttle body?

Then there is the issue of the age and mileage of the car. It could just be a worn engine with some blow by of the piston rings.

I did not replace all the parts. I cleaned out the hose from the valve cover to the catch can, replaced the hose from the can to the intake. I cleaned the can itself out. I only looked at the drains in the block and they looked pretty clean but I didn't verify they where open. Removed the flame trap too.

Mileage is 220,000km or 136,000 miles. Do you consider the video a fail or a pass?

I'd consider it a pass. I think you have issues when the glove stands up and basically flips you off.

I do agree with Sveedy. This is not terrible. Maybe check again in 6 months and if it is staying the same, don't work about it.

Good Luck!

That’s a pass. Vida calls for testing at the dipstick, -0,5 to 0 kPa

You are way under that on top
