Hey all. As most of us know its difficult to find help or information on volvo repairs outside the dealership- I plan to help MVS change that. Over the Years i have spent tens of thousands in replacing parts with labor on my Volvo C70 Convertible and after doing massive amounts of research I refuse to ever be taken advantage again. So with my trusty repair and car maual in hand sheer wilpower over strength here's the easy way to replace your cooling fan relay:
1. Locate the relay- it is NOT in the main fuse box. open the hood and as you are centered in front of the car reach your left hand down under the plastic cover above the radiator
2. Unplug the three wire connections-they may be a little corroded so be easy and steady and they will come out
3. Observe your new unit
4. plug in one by one with unit lettering facing the winshield- ensure snug fit ( the orange rubber inside the plug housing may need to be pushed down before you can maintain a secure fit. use a small screwdriver to push down rubber along the sides)
5. Set unit back into place with clip attached at the top(the angle is looking down onto unit) writing toward windshield
Done.
cooling fan relay purchased through fcpgroton: about $40.00
coling fan relay with labor at delearship: $172.00
Savings: $132.00
Knowing you can do it yourself...right: priceless

Great pictures! This write up is also helpful and applicable to the Air Pump Relay, which is located under the battery tray next to the air pump (on the 850's). That relay is also made by KAE (part #9442932) and runs about $30 -- much cheaper than going to the dealer or mechanic! Thanks!

I don’t think any of those connectors will go onto the “ wrong place” , Bishop.
After I get a coffee I’ll take a picture of my 99, should be the same. It’s only 0545 here!
