Smoked the E83 and found cracked IM. Nit motivated to pull it, so reassembled and can be driven local. Draw

Installed battery switch on T5. But if struggle. Hard starting. Got code for bad cam sensor and cam timing. Not motivated. 0-1-1

Went to install new thermostat on house. Need C common 24VDc for that app. Traced thermo wire down to furnace and couldn’t find the same loom downstairs. Wtf? 0-2-1

Hmm... maybe the vacuum hose to the sucking jet pump for the brake booster? Those hoses get rock hard and can crumble. Don't see many (I don't think I've seen any) cracked manifolds on M54s.

That would explain the whooshing sucking sound, too…

Oh yeah, you'll certainly hear it when that breaks! These engines produce a lot of intake noise anyway, but they get loud when there's a vacuum leak.

After nearly 2 1/2 weeks of cursing, the 850 is still giving me a beating. Everything I look at or try to re-install seems to turn out to have some issue or challenge.

Today should have bee an easy finish to the repairs. But nope! Once again hidden damage came to light. Was not looking forward to refitting the 2 x knee bolsters under the 850 dash. These are always a pain to do. Surprisingly the driver's side, which can be a bear, went fairly easily. Passenger side was a swine. Turns out someone had cross threaded 2 of the 3 studs at some point. The only one on the left side near the center required the nut to have the threads chased and then it fitted. The lower one on the RHS was completely mullered.

The nut was beyond saving so found a spare. You cannot get to the the thread with a thread cutting die, so I was thinking the whole dash had to come back out. But realized that by removing the lower support screw and the one higher on the 'A' pillar would allow some flex on the dash to allow access with a wobble shaft to the 2 mounting bolts for the knee bolster bracket. Removed it and fixed the threads.

Another half-an-hour or so wasted.

Next on the list, the lower panel under the LHS dash. Cleaning it found the slide support at the rear on the RHS was almost broken off and 2/3 of the mounting screw holes were cracked through. Checked the passenger side one and found it also had a cracked screw hole.

Plastic welded the holes and one one as it was bad managed to get a stable to hold. Welded the cracked slider and then reinforced with beige JB weld plastic.

While I was at it, started the repairs on the 2 end caps for the upper dash pad. Both had the screw mounts part broken off. I have glued what small parts I have but will have to fabricate some sort of mount for the screw or it will break the repairs.

Tried to reinstall the ash tray/cubby in the center of the dash. Again a fight as the plastic is warped. Got it fitted neatly eventually.

Last job was to tighten the steering wheel bolt and torque it before fitting the air-bag.

Put the battery on a trickle charger before heading off to the fight to fit the glove box liner and door. Again the usual fight trying to get the liner back in as 4/6 of the mounting screw holes were broken. I thought I may have a better one but no. Went and dug out my only broken hole repair kit which has dished washers and longer screws. Fitted that while again wrestling the door glove box door limit straps in place while feeding them through the slots in the liner and then bending the top of the liner to get the 2 small screws in for the catch.

Fitted the radio and left it out so I can check it with the code once the battery is attached.

I am still not happy with the dash repairs. Having nearly repaired almost every 90 degree bend in the dash frame and any screw mounts for cracks or breakages, I am still getting a squeak from the center right of the dash near the LHS of the glove box. The center position of the dash looks like it is deformed slightly so it runs tight to the LHS of the glove box door.

Tomorrow I will refit the under dash panels and reattach the battery to check the car starts and everything in the dash works as it should.

Hopefully no more surprises or issues or it get the matches to the fuel tank!!

Another attempt at fixing my V70 ECT issue today, with no more success than last time. Also the connector crumbled in my hands
Was about to open a topic about it, but think I might try replacing the thermostat first...

At least I managed to fix something today, wheel bearing was about to come off on the Subaru

Yahoo! The 850 AWD manual has finally left the garage with the owner! My fingers/hands are shredded from all the sharp metal and ragged broken plastic.

Car even left a small mark of oil on the floor to mark it's territory!

Owner texted me when he got home (about 30km away) to say the car was now so quiet. He has owned it for 10 years and says it was never this quiet in all his ownership. Almost makes it all worth while. Almost................ :x

Now on the the 98 V70 with grinding brakes and now a coolant leek.

I'm sure he's loving the peaceful drive now lol. I remember when I first drove my V70 after fixing the dash... the difference was unbelievable!
