850 T5 oil pressure loss: catastrophic oil cooler failure or headgasket? [In radiator oil cooler failure]

Post by atucker1 »

Hey everyone--long time 1995 850 turbo owner and wrencher here looking for some help with what may be a career-ender for my very well taken care of 850. Recently had my low oil pressure light come on while driving, and immediately pulled over to find copious oil in the coolant and oil/coolant mix sprayed all over the engine bay from the coolant reservoir. I checked the dipstick and there was no oil showing on the dipstick, which means that the engine lost at least a quart of oil into the coolant in a matter of seconds (it was full before I started driving). Needless to say I got the car towed, and had her taken to a local indie Volvo shop (don't have time to fix myself right now).

I need a bit of help figuring out what's going on. My thoughts are this was either a head gasket failure or a catastrophic oil cooler failure, one that caused enough oil loss in seconds to give me low oil pressure--although I've searched the forums and haven't found an account of this exact thing happening. My gut is telling me that the oil cooler makes more sense--the car didn't overheat, and was running smoothly with no CEL when this all happened. Doesn't fit the picture of a blown head gasket. To add complexity though, a mechanic I took the car to for something else 10 years ago said that a coolant test strip showed combustion products in the coolant (indicating a head gasket leak). Although I trust his word I wasn't sure that the test was accurate at the time since the car had no such issues, and the car has run great for 25,000 miles since then with no issues, no CEL, no coolant loss, no water in oil, and no overheating problems since then until this week—I’d basically forgotten about it and seemingly with no issue.

Now, with my car in the shop for the current oil loss problem, my mechanic calls me today and says that it's "definitely the headgasket" because there was "pressure in the coolant circuit." I believe he's referring to the oil/coolant that sprayed out, and I don't believe he's done any actual tests yet. To me this pressure could logically be caused by a failed oil cooler leaking oil pressure into the coolant circuit. When I asked him about the oil cooler he said it might ALSO be an oil cooler failure on top of a head gasket failure.

I'm skeptical that the headgasket and oil cooler would fail at the exact same time, and that with a major headgasket failure the car would still be running fine with no CEL. I’m skeptical there is anything wrong with the head gasket, or even if there is, that it caused this recent catastrophic loss of oil pressure and oil in the coolant. Would really appreciate any input on what could be most likely, and also if there are any tests (leakdown testing, pressure test the radiator?) that I should have my shop do that would tell us if this is really a blown head gasket or if it’s the oil cooler. The reason this is so important to sus out is if it's just the oil cooler I'll have it fixed for about a grand, but if it's the head gasket I probably won't be fixing the car :'(

You can remove and bypass the oil cooler on these cars( see Robert DIY YOUtube series) but that’s about $400 in labour spent at a shop. Compression test at $150 would be the best spend right now for your decision tree,

Cylinder head gasket failure is about 9.3x more likely than oil cooler IMHO.

The engine oil cooler delete plate is available from Mother Volvo, 1366780.
https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/prod ... 66780.html
Also can obviously be sourced from a salvage yard, time permitting. Robert normally has some or can get one on request. It is sometimes referred to as a 'blockoff', which is misleading.
If the very life of the car hangs in the balance here, a suggestion would be do the delete plate first - just abandon the lines in situ, - then either a compression test, or a leakdown if the shop has that equipment. Leakdown might be a better diagnostic.

Wanted to follow up in case anyone else has a similar issue. Thankfully it ended up just being that the oil cooler failed inside the radiator—head gasket is totally fine. Replaced the radiator and she’s been running perfect with no further issues, and no pressure in the cooling system. So, it’s interesting to see that an oil cooler failure can look quite like a blown head gasket—make sure to rule that out if you’re having symptoms of pressure and oil in the coolant, before you go straight for a head gasket job. Thanks for the input all!

I am very, very happy I called this one wrong! Thanks for the followup reply, that is great info for the next gal/guy.

I had this issue at one point in time on my 1998 volvo v70xc the oil cooler in the radiator got a crack in it and oil go into the coolant overflow bottle but didnt mix with oil in the oil pan i had the radiator replaced and that took care of that issue. i also had to have a leaky radiator replaced last year and i opted to perform the oil cooler delete all together so i never have to worry about this again i got the block off plate from tascaparts it was in stock. on a side note the oil cooler lines were leaking at the radiator/and at the oil cooler thermostat and the thermostat housing so it was a good idea just deleting everything no more pesky oil leaks and no more issues with oil cooler inside radiator giving out.
