PNP switch / Abs Light - 97 850
PNP switch / Abs Light - 97 850
Okay I checked in with you guys regarding my PNP switch since I had the flashing arrow. Since them my ABS light has been coming on here and there. I took the car to a volvo mechanic who charged me a pretty fair deal. $280.00 including labor. When I arrived, he asked if my ABS light was on. I told him at times yes. He immediately said I'm doing the PNP switch for you cause you asked me to, but I've a feeling it's the ABS control unit, not the PNP switch that you need. But at my request he replaced the PNP switch only. When I went to pick up the car, he said he was unsuccessful at clearing the arrow and the check engine light because of the ABS control unit needing to be replaced. I asked if it was my transmission, he said not at all, your car is fine. It's the ABS unit. He said it's all connected to the transmission so without replacing ABS unit, my flashing arrow is not going to go away, nor the check engine light. But the car will run fine with no issues untill I can replace the unit. He said he would check on the part a used/rebuilt one since it's not worth getting a new one. My question is, is my car going to continue to run fine as is, untill I get the ABS unit replaced, and will rowing shift back and forth clear the arrow at all, since having the PNP switch replaced? Everything else still works, radio, back up lights, plenty of transmission fluid. Car not sluggish, not dragging, starts up fine. And he gave me the old part.

Something doesn't add up....never had the up arrow or the issues you speak of from an ABS unit. I may be wrong but.... I would be afraid of a Check Engine Light on as an ABS unit (which is not tied into the transmission as far as I know) doesn't cause this. I'm hoping others will chime in because something's not right here.

I have seen it (once) and as you all know ANYTHING is possible with Volvosmy850 wrote:That's why I wanted to check in here on the site. I dont remember reading other posts, or being told that the two were tied to CEL, or the transmission.
Rebuild the ABS unit for $115 and go from there.
If there are no transmission codes that's all that's really left

You have an 850, it's not going to hurt anything to disconnect the battery- better safe than sorry. You'll need the code for your radio however if you're going to disconnect the battery.

Reason for my question, is, unless this mechanic didnt have to disconnect battery, to change the PNP switch, or he had the code for my radio, and reset all my radio stations, then I'm thinking maybe he didnt change the switch and I was duped out of 280.00. After looking at the directions I printed from Bay13 a few weeks ago, I'm a bit sceptical now. ???

The programmed presets on the radio will live forever without power but the code prompt will come on when the battery is disconnected.
It is possible that they didn't pull the battery when they changed the switch - it should be easy to tell if it is new just by looking at it.
