Just to close the loop on my issue: after also replacing the second sensor, my problem went away for good. So it seems I either replaced the wrong sensor first (what is labeled as sensor 1 in diagram is actually sensor 2) OR both sensors were/went bad in quick succession. Lot of work to replace either sensor so my advice/experience: when you get a 'sensor bad' code, just replace them both.
