Early stages of getting rid of the E83 (2006 , 210k miles) as each year is a fight to pass emissions
A nice low mile 2014 XC90 is red would fit the bill…. Is 2014 the last year for the P2 chassis??

Yes, 2014 is the last ones. Really hard to beat—my experience on my 2005 is good (2.5T AWD). I think the added weight is a bit hard on front suspension like other P2s but easy to replace like others of that chassis. Only frustration is interior plastics are getting brittle, hopefully the 2014 ones will have better longevity.

Pretty steep learning curve on the B8444S; I read a factory procedure on replacing the intake gasket and concluded it might be easier to pull the engine.

I think i will try to stay with the 6 although I wont rule out an 8. I drove one in SoCal and it was silky smooth.
Hey look! Capital has some for $100 and I just have to take the train there and drive it home! (thats just for foggy)

The V8 was only made until 2011? if I recall correctly. There have been a few 2014's (were they all black?) that have gone through our local main auction house. Several are dumped there at what I would consider silly money by the 2 local Volvo dealers.
I went to look at a couple and they were mostly OK, but the main obvious issue was broken windshields (which is standard up here). They were looking for $10000 US or there abouts as the reserve prices. As I know the service manager at one of the dealers, I asked him why they had sent a lowish mileage car to auction. 2014 with lots of bells and whistles, clean exterior and broken windshield. He said there were several other issues including needing a muffler system, A/C compressor and there was something else. Also it was due a large service.
To me that car with around 95,000 miles was too pricey for the work needed. It might be worth the $10,000 US with the work done.
In the US you have the advantage that we don't have of FWD versions. That way you lose a lot of expensive parts that break as well as getting better fuel mileage.
Good luck with the hunt!
Neil.
