Need ABS help..

Post by DBongiorni »

I have a 2000 C70. One day this month I had the car warming up I get in and I have ABS light traction control light and engine light. So I got a rebuilt abs module from Midwest I put it on the car the lights go out. I back out of the garage all the lights come back on. I read the code cause I got my hands on a ABS scanner this time and it says either front left or right speed sensor. So I buy 2 new ones put them on clear the codes and it lasted 61 miles I started the car up and all the lights again.

Check the reluctor rings on the end of the axles that the ABS sensors read from. They can get rusted, filled with dirt or even cracked, all preventing the ABS sensors from reading correctly.

They are corroded. Easiest to clean them? Or just buy new axles since it’s original with 93k and the passenger side has a ripped boot I noticed.

Don't buy new axles!

All of the replacement CV axles are notoriously crappy, like in 5k-40k lifespan crappy. The factory axles on your car can go to 200k easily though they might need a boot replacement along the way.

The reluctor rings are less than $10 each (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... feb-100751). Replacing the ring is about the same labor as replacing the axle: pull the axle, tap the old ring off with a screwdriver or drift and a hammer, sand the area underneath smooth, tap the new ring on (use the old ring between the hammer and the new one, so better not to obliterate the old one in removal), re-install the axle. Even less labor for an experienced mechanic who can probably swap the reluctors without pulling the axle completely, by just popping the CV out of the hub. Maybe you can swap 'em that way too!

The can be cleaned with a wire brush, may need to pop out of the hub for good access. If they are salt-hammered then that effort may not bear fruit, but could be worth a try. I'd just go for new rings.

EDIT: Oops just now seeing the note about one torn CV boot. I'd pull and replace the boot and the ring, but you'll want to read up on what's involved and decide if that's the right course for you. That's assuming the CV joint doesn't have a ton of play already due to dirt getting inside the torn boot.

Thanks for the info! Yeah the boot must have recently tore so it’s still greasy and no play. I’ll order some rings and a repair kit hopefully that fixes these lights. This car has been a headache I just did the oil trap then this happened.

I forgot to do an update on this pain. So I put new reluctor rings on both axles, I cleared all codes again. I drove it for awhile the abs light came on but only the abs this time, drove another 166 miles got it inspected then the next day started the car engine light came on traction control and abs again and has been on since the beginning of January. I don’t know why the engine light keeps saying can’t communicate with abs. I want this fixed cause it happened out of the blue and I got a year till it won’t pass inspection again, and with these lights very rarely the car won’t start just free crank then start the next key cycle.

Maybe worth calling Matty at Mid-West to see if he can suggest a solution. While I have never had a bad unit out there, it is possible that the unit you have has an issue. The only remaining component issue may be a trans speed sensor.

My speedo works fine and it shifts fine could that still be it? I did talk to Matt he said my old module was fine when he got mine and I currently have his rebuilt in the car.

At this point I think you need to find someone that can read the ABS system to see if any codes are present. You have done everything I can think of short of replacing the rear sensors and rings.
