A $100 '99 V70 GLT

Post by Sveedy »

So I figured I'd start a new thread on this project that I stepped into a couple of months ago.
It started with me rescuing a '99 V70 that was headed to the scrap yard. 161k miles. Desert Wind paint. It had apparently been sitting for 4 years after being overheated and warping the head. The owner then proceeded to lose the head, as well as everything that had been removed to get the head off.
" $100 and it's yours. I'll even flatbed it to your house for $25." ( the family owns an equipment rental yard ). Now I had already called the local junkyard to find out what they would pay for it ( $225 ), so I bit the hook.

Got it home and started looking it over to determine if I should keep it, or send it off to Volvo Valhalla. Body not too bad, but the interior has seen better days. Top roof trim mostly gone, and both bumpers have taken some hits. But overall not too bad. I can't see scraping it.
Now my son decides that he wants to get into this as well, so we decide to take this on as a project together. That will help a lot just in time alone.

We decided on a " value engineered " rebuild for now, meaning as many junkyard parts as possible to just get it on the road. I found a cylinder head as well as most of the other missing engine parts online from a junkyard in Oregon. It even came with a IPD oil filler cap, which I had never seen ( and for $75 new, I can see why ). And then a '98 V70 showed up at my local yard. That car has so far provided a perfect set of roof trim strips, its near perfect interior, and almost new Sachs struts.
Of course we are now doing a few more things such as dropping the sump to replace o-rings etc. So considering job creep, I don't see this being wrapped up before summer, but we will see. In the end it should be a decent daily driver, which we can always say
" Bought it for a $100 ! "

Definitely worth saving. IT always is frustrating to see cars scrapped that could be fairly easily saved.

Great you are doing this as a father/son project too! Never too you to get them into a Volvo. This was how I got into them, but in my case it was my grandpa that was the influencer. My parents then became Volvo owners for over 40 years until they stopped driving. My 3 brothers also have owned at least one Volvo as well.

Good Luck!

Neil.

Yeah, I have to say it is a nice piece. I'd put it in the " For the Volvo guy who has everything " category.
I'll be interested in seeing if it has the same seal seepage issue that the stock caps have.

I’ve wondered if that alum cap is red hot when you go to add some oil on the road.

Love this. I just saved a $600 V70XC from the crusher a couple months ago and I love saying I bought it for $600. Jealous that you can say the same for $100! I have been feeling grateful that parts are so cheap for these cars right now, at least from rockauto.

Also, probably an unpopular opinion but I dig the color. It would look amazing with tint and set of anthracite wheels like Volans. I have an 05 Tacoma in a similar color scheme and it would be funny if my V70 was the same so I had a fleet of "old man tan" vehicles.

Very nice. I do like the color. It's similar (the same maybe) as my 850. I'm a little surprised you didn't look for a whole engine to swap in.

I can't imagine how a guy would lose a head, but some people are "amazing".
