Need #9176272 shifter cables, 1998 V70 manual, for senior w/ cancer

Post by matthew1 »

Who can help Toni?

Charlottesville VA

She's tried Erie and other places. Here is her first email to me:
Dear Matt, You've already helped me and my ancient Volvo (1998 V70 manual station wagon) through your site. And through what I've learned there, I've actually helped my good mechanic here -- Charlottesville VA, by the way. But the latest problem has stumped him, and I'm truly desperate. Background: My Volvo was given to me in 2013 by someone to whom it had been given several years before. And I was super happy because I'd always wanted one just like it. So I've willingly put a lot of money into it for repairs and replacements attributable to age and mileage (well over 200,000).

Between those shop stops, it has always run beautifully. I really want it to be my last car. As for me, I turn 78 next Tuesday -- so my mileage is high, too. And I've always intended to get it a lot higher -- as in, I have to live to 100 to have any hope of catching up. But a diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer in late '70 has made that a lot harder. I have been doing well. As of a test last week, however, I now have a fresh challenge to deal with. And this morning, my mechanic said that my much loved and much depended on car needs shifter cables (#9176272), which -- according to him -- are discontinued and cannot be found anywhere. So, he says, I'll have to junk the car. Nooooooooooooooooooo.

I'm a good researcher. I've actually astounded and amazed my doctors with what I've found to help my case. I do not believe for a minute that there's no way to find cables for my car. But a couple of hours of scouring the web tells me this is going to be another hard case. I'm in no position to take advantage of salvage auctions. I know of no Volvo junkyards. (Who junks a Volvo?) And I truly do not have time -- as in life time -- to cruise chat rooms. (I'll probably have to start new treatment for my latest health glitch in a couple of weeks.) Also, as footnote: My husband (who also has cancer) and I have depended on this car for much needed small travels -- "mental health" trips -- beyond the county line. (He trusts his 1998 Ford Ranger further. I don't.) Can you help? If so, I would be more grateful than I could ever say. Whatever the case, keep up the very good work. Most appreciatively, Toni [redacted] Charlottesville VA

I’ve got them but promised them to Brandon earlier. He may not need.

Let Toni know I’m a possible.

Mine are 2000 so she may need to replace the entire works to get a setup , shifter , housing, and cables

Toni here. Wow. Your response gives me real hope. Please keep me posted. Otherwise, I'd just note that what my mechanic's front desk guy relayed to me was that the #9176272 cables were all that's needed to get Scamper (my Volvo) back on the road. It did occur to me that I might have to buy a whole shifter assembly to get them. That would be fine. But you seem to say that more parts might be needed even if I had them. Aurghhh. Whatever the case, however, just knowing that the dratted cables are actually out there to be found is a lift when I need one. So thank you very much indeed.

Hello Toni! Good luck on your journey with Nature.

Are you possibly only in need of the shifter cable ends? Those wear out but you can buy aftermarket replacements cheap. Maybe get a picture of the worn out part or ask your shop?

Pm,d my info, you might not be able to reply until you hit 10 post count

Link to bushing replacement here.

Toni!

Hang in there! I am also a cancer fighter. These (it's a pair) cables are discontinued, but I found a set at Pelican Parts in Harbor City, CA. They have a website, here's a link to the exact part on their online store.

https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info2/9176272.htm

Please let me know if you need any assistance, happy to chat about this.

Steve, as you know, I went through this over the summer and the manual cables are hard to find.

There was shifter/cable set for sale in Albany on ebay for close to $400 in the summer but I don't see it listed anymore.

I managed to find a shift/cable assembly on ebay for about $40 + $100 shipping from Latvia of all places. It arrived quickly and was in good shape. I just did a search last night and couldn't find any.

These are scarce at this point I am afraid. But I suspect a set could be obtained overseas where I think there were more manual volvos sold than over here. I'll keep searching.

Toni, Do you know if you need both cables?

My old set, has one good cable left. if you only needed one, you MIGHT be able to use mine. There would be some work needed to swap the cable over. They are designed to be replaced as a set but that is for installation convenience not a requirement. I'll take a look at mine again to see how difficult it would be to separate them if you only need one.

The other side of mine snapped.

amblerman --

Thanks much. No. I don't know whether I need both cables but I'll find out from my mechanic in a couple of hours. On this subject: I found a long-ago post on this forum that said that of the pair, one cable controls movement front-to back and the other controls movement side-to-side. When my problem started, only reverse was affected. On the way to the shop just over a week ago, second went out. That kind of suggests that, at that moment at least, only the side-to-side cable had failed. So just maybe only one replacement cable would work. As I said, I should know shortly.

Otherwise, your long distance forage sounds great. I had that thought, too -- that is, that more ancient manuals live on in Europe. I have a terrible time with e-Bay though. All the variables in the listings and the fact that it constantly shifts to items other than the one being searched make me nuts. I'm sure my mechanic would have a much easier time with it if he would just try. But he won't.

Also, a follow up to Oly850 above: I just called Pelican Parts where "Mike" said, "Unfortunately, we do not stock that part." That's despite it appearing on the website as you noted. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Likely your 'side to side' cable is streaking or breaking cable strands and will completely fail soon. I do not have cables.
Perhaps some enterprising person could produce replacements from standard push-pull industrial cables.

Do you think you could post photos of your cables and I could consider making replacement cables from industrial parts?
