I came home on leave late in my Excellent Adventure in the Pacific and went into downtown DC to meet Dad for lunch at my old high school hangout bar - you could still drink at eighteen back in those days. Behind the bar was one of my best friends from that era, himself lately back from Southeast Asia, sporting a right impressive AK entry wound on his neck, and an equally impressive exit wound on his back - but it was hidden by his shirt. He got a helicopter ride over that one. 72 hours after being hit ( his third ) he was at Walter Reed Army Hospital, pretty convenient for his folks since he grew up in Arlington. He was almost discharged when we reconnected at The Old Ebbitt Grill. He poured me a beer and slid a copy of "...Roadside..." across the bar; I eventually read all his work, 'Eventually' because that's how he wrote. His stuff helped me through some pretty tough times.
