seized belt

Post by Kkaiser »

07 xc90 3.2.. driving into manhattan and I lost power steering. ten seconds later temp goes thru the roof. I get the car to a parking spot. The belt is not turning. .. Tensioner? water pump?? I do not know yet.. Car has 100K. My question is this. assuming it is either the tensioner or the water pump. and I get into the Job.. what else should I do while I am in that Space??? any help PLEASE. I love my car but still trying to get my head around the engineering.

There are two belts, one drives the peripherals such as PS pump and the other the timing gear.
Ignore. Not relevant for 3.2 engine.

If the car still drives, then at least the timing stuff works. I can only assume that something is binding on the peripheral side and it can be any number of things. For the temp to rise this rapidly, I can only surmise that the engine was struggling so much at low rpm, that the water pump couldn't cool down the engine fast enough(or your fan doesnt work at all).

Did you notice a loss of power before this? You must have.

No loss of power but if the belt is not turning than the water pump is not pumping water. If the water pump isn’t pumping the engine is not cooling I would assume. Also if the water pump is seized. It we are in a similar situation

The water pump is driven by the timing belt, not the serpentine belt. This doesn't mean that it isnt faulty, but that this thing needs closer inspection.

Thank you. I have not opened it up yet to see what is going on.. I have been wondering what parts I should order and replace while I am in there

One of the accessories failed, the belt you see is your serpentine belt. Your car has a timing chain, NOT a timing belt.

The serpentine belt is driven by the READ pully directly below your ac compressor. It drives the ac compressor, has an idler, tensioner and drives the water pump and power steering pump.

To complete this service, belt, READ pully, seal behind it, idler, tensioner and water pump get changed.

Don’t drive it, or even run it if it can be avvoided. If that belt snaps, it can take out the read seal/read unit and it gets a whole lot more expensive, fastly.

3.2 does NOT have a timing belt. It has a timing chain.

Oops, sorry about that. After being around the 2.4 variants so long, it's sort of a habit. In this case I recommend my comments be completely ignored since I have mislead the user.
