21/21.5mm Front Sway Bars available again (9173983 9173471)

Post by crasbe »

Hello everyone,

my V70 I had deteriorated sway bar bushings and since you're supposed to change the whole sway bar in that case, this was an issue, as the sway bar is NLA from Volvo and there are no third party suppliers.
Therefore I worked with Skandix to have new ones made by a reputable suspension supplier (I think Skandix doesn't want to disclose which one) and they are available again in 21mm and 21.5mm (yellow and yellow/blue):

The sway bars have removable bushings (as far as I can tell they are not made from PU) and clamp rings to avoid the stabilizer moving side to side.

This sway bar has a much higher quality than the cheap ones you can get for P2 Volvos (I installed one in my S60 last year and it already starts to rust and the rubber appears to start cracking...)

Best Regards,
Chris

Disclaimer:
I am not affiliated with Skandix and paid for my stabilizer bar. There is no further deal between Skandix and me, so this is not a paid promotion, just information.

Thanks again for doing this for the Volvo community! Thanks to Skandix too for their efforts.

It will be interesting to see how this works out. I recall my brother having an 850 many years ago where the bush separated from the steel. At that point Volvo offered a replacement bush and clamp, but it did not last more than a year when not vulcanized to the steel. This sway-bar looks a lot like the IPD version with the side collar to stop it sliding which if I recall correctly, the OE on does not have and is probably why a new bush does not work on the OE variant as the bush can slide.

Please let us know how this works out as it would be great option moving forward.

Neil.

I've used clamp-on stops on ours with poly bushings to good effect.

We have 21.5mm bars on the front of both of our cars. Hers still had the stock bushings, but one is starting to come apart. These might be a good option, but still a bit spendy.

Thanks for the update/info, though!

That sway bar from Skandix wasn't that pricey even from Volvo.
Just cut and burn the old bushings from old sway bar and install new ones.

Bushings can't be more than 10-15€/piece.

The poly bushings and clamp-on stops aren't too expensive.
