Did you try turning the steering wheel as you pull the key?

Well, I finally got around to taking the consule apart as posted earler on my V70 with 91,000 miles. I pulled the gear shift knob off and looked around in the area. I found a cable near the bottom of the gear shift on the pasenger side that when I pulled on it, clicking was heard around the key. It seems that the cable was stuck and moving it released it to move that allowed me to take the key out of the ignition switch. Problem solved.

Thanks for all the help.

I know this is old, but just wanted to say that simply spraying some silicon lubricant on the shift release button did the trick for me!

Remember - The shiftlock overide is connected to the same cable that runs up to the ignition lock.
Either button, the one on the shift lever handle or the overide on the console can lock up your key.
These cars are getting old, so it may also be a stretched cable. The adjuster is in the shifter end.
