I think what would be super helpful would be a start here type howto document we could put in the files repository.

What ECU to buy, what software to download, what pins to jump in order to initiate boot mode, info about battery level needing to stay above 14v or whatever, etc. also what the bin files are as well as the xdf files and how to navigate tunerpro and motronic suite. It would be a big help to say here is how you increase RPM, here is how you remove torque limit, etc, etc so with the examples people can learn how to do it as well.

If there is a good place to host this to collaborate on stuff, like a wiki that isn't having to read thousands of forum posts that would work good too. If you have any notes you have made please upload them to that folder. I plan on at some point organizing it and making a site with all the relevant information so it doesn't get lost.

Hey all,
Trying to get into tuning my '98 R, and having issues getting started. First, I bought a cable that had the wrong chipset in it - so I was unable to get TunerPro RT to recognize it.

I've bought another cable and confirmed via the FT_Prog software that it is indeed the recommended chip, and it is running the most recent FTDI driver. Connects to the car via Vol_FCR fine, but no matter what I do, I cannot get TunerPro RT to work with it.

I've tried switching to just about every com port in device manager (and matching on TunerPro), changing the latency to the recommended value, and still nothing. In TunerPro RT preferences>data logging/aquisition, I have been trying to "test for valid interface" in the configure plug-in component section, and I keep getting the error "cable not found or not functioning (tested at 8192 baud). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, changing usb ports, changing com ports, nothing seems to work. Am I missing something here?

I then tried the basic communication with the car via Realterm as recommended on the M4.4 wiki - and have not gotten any response from the ECU at all in listening mode. I know it can connect with the ECU since it works with Vol_FCR, so why isn't it working with anything else?

To make things worse, after trying to communicate with the ECU in listen mode via realterm, the car is no longer cranking. I've followed protocol as far as connecting/disconnecting the cables and programs from the car, so I'm worried I may have bricked the ECU. Getting all warning lights on dash and fuel pump/radio are turning on, but no crank. There's a slim chance the battery may be too low (I'll check tomorrow as it's raining outside today) but is there a possibility I just trashed my ECU just by trying to communicate with it? Car ran just fine last night.

Any advice on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. I've been scouring the 500 page archived thread on volvospeed as well as any other forums where people were having the same "cable not found" issue, and have yet to find a solution.

Often Windows will have a service running that will block things, like IIS/Webserver which runs port 80 or 443.

Also, is it running under emulation (virtual machine)?
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Are you doing this on the bench or in the car?

I didn't have that much trouble setting ours up, but other than for logging, I have done all of the other communications/flashing on the bench.
