Engine System Service Required message - 07 XC70

A buddy is looking at a 07 XC70 with about 175k miles (280kkm). I have read many 'theories' and 'suggestions' what this means.

The fog light switch on the center console is flashing. As I understand it if you have the engine running, with the doors close, you press the READ button on the end of the turn signal stalk and hold it. Then press the fog light button twice and then the message board will display code(s) that the system is seeing for errors.

These look like 2 digit numbers, and I have read various beliefs as to what they are. Does anyone actually know what they are and is there a list of these somewhere?

Lots of crazy beliefs of removing the oil filler cap while the engine is running and then waiting a few seconds and refitting it switches the message off?? Oil level being over filled, oil condition, cracked oil filled cap seal or clogged oil filler cap and many other 'theories'.

Those who know me I don't do well without actual facts. Also switching off the code (again theory of using the trip switch and READ button like resetting the service light).

Sorry it is slightly confusing. In the center of the console you will usually see yellow triangle and message to the left "engine service..." (will include example of 05xc) I never tried to check the codes via pressing the combination that you suggested since have Vida/dice clone. If to assume that you were referring to the triangle symbol and the car is running great, I would try to see if the cruise control is turning on. If not-most likely it is brake pedal position sensor. However the problem can even be from incorrectly reinstalling radio(meaning starting the car with radio detached...that's how I bought vida). Any chance you can post a photo or video of it and maybe numbers of the codes?

Thanks for that. We never got as far as checking the car out. When my buddy sent me a link to the car on FBM, I recognized it. It had been up for sale a few weeks ago with a bunch of not to cheap issues. Also the seller (a car flipper) neglected to mention it had been in an accident and whoever repaired it fitted standard headlights and not Xenon's the car came with when new, throwing an ABL warning.

I believe the codes may also be able to be shown using the trip meter button and the READ message.

My buddy had also driven the car and it had a whine when speeding up and slowing as well as a clunking from the rear. 'Car has no issues' the seller says..................
