1996 850 GLT Sedan

Post by Cvovo7 »

Hello everyone. Bought a 1996 850 glt. It sat for a while before I got it. She runs so quiet. But, when it's cold out, I'm running into starting issues. It'll start idle then die out like fuel is getting cut off. After about 30 tries of turning the key, the car gets a little warm, I hear a buzzing noise under the dash and it will start on the next turn of the key. Some guys say relay going bad, some say check exhaust temp sensor, but I can't find even any to order. Are they referring to the o2 sensor or something different. Car has new idel control valve, mass air flow sensor, plugs, wires, distributor, cam position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, main relay for fuel pump, coolant temp sensor, even swapped out the 103 relay under the hood. Does anyone have suggestions or experience with this specific issue?

What comes to mind: Are the Sensors OE or (cheap) aftermarket? These cars are picky about the parts thrown at them. Other than that it seems like you covered the basics pretty well.

Sensors actually may be original. I'm gonna take a look and check em out today. Buzzing noise is what's throwing me because the only thing under the dash panel is another relay block. Just don't know which one, if it's going bad, would cause car to stall during cold start ups.

Something came to mind. Does Volvo use engine gas temp sensors on non turbo models. If so, that maybe the issue

You mean a sensor for the temperature of the fuel? I've never heard of that on any car, of any make.

I second the question about the sensors. If you're just throwing parts at it, and getting cheap parts, you're likely compounding the issue. I bought a cheap "remanufactered" MAF and it was a dud, right out of the box. I only bought it because it was cheap, and I figured it would be great to have a spare. It turned out to be a waste of $25.

No aftermarket parts at all. I'm hearing a buzzing noise under the driverside dash during cold starts. When I hear that noise the car eventually starts after a couple turns of the key. Some say that buzzing can be the engine gas temp sensors relay? There is a relay board behind the dash. My guess is something related to fuel is going out.

Never heard of a gas temp sensor. Might be a diesel thing. I'd be looking at 3 things:

1) IAT valve needing cleaned.
2) Coolant (ECT) sensor is bad so not enriching fuel when cold.
3) Fuel pressure/Relay issue.

Start with the basics.
