Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated

Garage is saying that vida is pointing them at the haldex being the problem and that they'll unplug the haldex and pull the prop shaft.
They're suggesting sorting out the haldex is a bit of a pain, so I'm thinking that if the car is happy without the haldex, I can just get it sorted another time- hopefully before winter!

AWD Volvo with amputated driveshaft does not become FWD. It still thinks it is AWD, with consequences like terrible torque steer. Driving it like that is not a pleasure, nor is it "lighter" - it is slower in fact. I had/have both FWD and AWD Volvos, FWD drives differently than AWD with broken AWD.

Leave the driveshaft in place or you will ruin flanges.

Fascinating thing, I heard a lot about torque steer before driving for a while w/o my shaft, but I didn't find it to be really much of an issue. Don't know how this suggests my car might be broken. :-D Or maybe I'm not just sporty enough in my driving. I thought it was fine.

same here, I don't drag race, I'm happy without AWD but might get curious enough to fix it one day.
Leave rear drive shafts in place, main prop shaft can be removed or left in place.

I'm not a reckless driver, just taking advantage of how good this car steers and accelerates predictably. It does have torque steer w/o Haldex engaging. Our babysitter, who takes this car from time to time, also noticed that.

Thanks for all the input!

So the garage have disconnecting the haldex controller and pulled the prop shaft and I'll be picking it up this afternoon.
Interestingly, they're saying that you can now hear the rear diff humming quite loudly whilst driving, and they think that that means it ( the diff) probably won't last very long. They've also said that it still has all the error messages.

I mentioned that I'd seen used comlete haldex units on ebay for a few hundered pounds, but they didn't seem interested at all and suggested the labour would make it very cost prohibitive.

I think I'll take it to another garage this week for another opinion considering the positive results and solutions eveyrone here's experienced.

Find another garage for sure, this one does not have car mechanics understanding how mechanisms (trust bearings, hypoid gears) work.

Literally 4 bolts. Once the driveshaft is out, it is literally 4 bolts.

Picked up the car last night and tried to glean as much info as I could.

Garage basically insinuated that they regularly get cars with failing haldex and from they're experience, fixing them, or replacing them seems to always result in finding ( causing?) other issues? In there opinion, its a luck of the draw if your haldex last 60k miles or 200k miles! They also follow the line suggesting that there's no benefit to servicing the haldex in anyay, usch as changing the fluid/filter/pump.

Whatever their opinion, I'm taking to another garage as soon as I can.

In the mean time, I'm intierested, mechanically, in what people have experienced using early xc70s with the haldex removed. I still have several error messages on the dash, and the ABSmodule is still offline- so no ABS.
I also no have a very obvious whining noise from the rear diff- as was pointed out to me by the garage before collection- which wasnt there when the propshaft was in and the haldex was plugged in. The garage commented that the rear diff often is next to die after the haldex, but they didn't give any more info on that!
