2012 - S80 AWD - Fan 1 Control Circuit

Hi,

I own a 2012 Volvo S80 T6 AWD.

I had an issue with the cooling fan before.

Just like this guy had a problem "viewtopic.php?p=565609#p565609"



Long story short,

There are two fans in radiator fan assembly and the main fan was keep running till kill the battery no matter driving or parked and turned off.

So I disconnected a cable (probably a signal cable, which was located lower part of the assembly on the driver side) and reconnected and the main fan didn't even start to run while the auxillary fan in the assembly was running when coolant temperautre hitting 100'c .

I replaced the module (with module from Gates, SKU: FCM108) and it was working good until today morning.

However, the fan started to keep running even 30~40 minutes after parked with the coolant temperature around 70'c (checked with OBDII).

So I disconnected and reconnected it.

And the main fan didn't start to work again.




I used my OBDII to read the code and I saw two codes.

- "P048011: Fan 1 Control Circuit, General electrical Failures. Circuit short to ground"
- "P048000: Fan 1 Control Circuit. General Failure information, No sub type information"

I guess it might be related to ECM and I want to get help before I replace some parts and spend money.

I tried to take the fuse out to replace it and I couldn't even take it out cuz it was stuck in the box covering fuse box because of the frame of the car.
(I don't know who designed this fuse box location and frame on the top of it.)


I would appreciate if there is anyone who knows what this problem is related to.

How long has the aftermarket Gates control unit lasted? The Volvo units on the twin fan units are a known weak point. My buddy was having the reverse issue of the fans not coming on. He fitted a used unit and normal service was resumed. My ex-Volvo mechanic buddy said these fail all the time. Common issue. It may just be bad luck and you got a bad part that it failed or maybe it is just bad product.

It was a double fan assembly and the Gates Control unit lasted for like 5 months.
I will have to get a whole used assembly I guess.
Don't wanna use a lot of money for this part haha.

I would also take it up with the supplier and see if you can get your money back on a bad part.

Did you ever find a solution here? I'm having the same issue, but with the fans not turning on with AC on when the engine is cold. Replaced the whole fan assembly with module and still getting the error code P048000.
