Glove Box "Absorber" - 2004 V70 2.5T

Post by rntaboy »

Recently my glove box door stopped openly fully. I wasn't able to get a good look at what was happening because of the lack of opening, but after some quick research on the typical cause and replacement procedure I ordered a Glove Box Support (9491713) off FCPEuro. The shock arrives and I go to do the replacement, and magically the glovebox opens normally for the first time in weeks. But the mechanism to slow open the glove box is significantly different than all the videos/guides/VIDA replacement instructions I've seen.
The mechanism on my V70 looks like this:

I haven't checked with any of the online Volvo parts suppliers directly yet to confirm, but it does not seem like that "absorber" (30643810) is available in new stock anywhere.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this glove box bit, where to best source a replacement (preferably new), or any info on how it can be repaired?

I can't imagine it is possible to wear it. It is just a loaded spring, basically. What happened to yours?

The chord is liable to breaking. It can be re-stringed but getting the correct tension takes a few attempts to get it just right

The plunger isn't the easiest of items to dismantle, the bottom part of the plunger is tricky to separate and requires gentle persuasion.

It took me several attempts with the length of the cord before I found something close to what it should be. I settled for 195mm between the knot and top of the loop

All back together and ready to refit. Note I fitted the grommet incorrectly in this picture it should be facing the opposite direction

It is possible to install the plastic tube body in the wrong orientation - upside down. I made this mistake when replacing a broken part. When it is upside down the spring and plunger tend to bind. I don't have a picture handy for the correct install position.

I appreciate all the replies, and the excellent instructions from P80GLT.
Not sure what goofed up on mine, but it is currently working properly for some reason after weeks of being stuck. I'll add it to my list of bits to look out for next time I hit up the junkyard to scavenge replacement/backup parts.
