Leak from fuel tank when filling up! Topic is solved

The repair was finished after finding fuel safe silicon fuel hose to use as the pipe joiner.. This has worked perfectly and the car sails through mot inspection... I used cv boot clips to secure the pipe in place and it looks intentional and factory standard.. No leaks and it is still holding strong..

V70 2003 petrol auto. Same problem, fuel leak whilst filling. Big pool on the ground. Eliminated everything other than the rubber hose connection to the tank. Impossible to access from under and simply could not drop subframe and tank for access. Because the car only has a few year left, decided on something drastic. Spare wheel well, cut out a large enough section in front of connection position (drilled holes rather than risk sparks from angle grinder). Opened up enough for decent access - approx. 250mm wide by 250mm high. Looked drastic and involved a lot of cosmetic finishing after the job. But, success. Old rubber had perished and my 'inspection hatch' was large enough to get the job done. All in all, I know this is a traumatic task, but for me there was no other choice, and it worked.

Cutting fuel system access holes is a risky modification. Some fuel tanks used to be located inside the trunk area of cars (Mustang, Jaguar, Mercedes) and during extremely strong rear impacts, the fuel tank would be crushed and spray the interior of the vehicle. Many car companies run a non-regulatory crash test directly into the filler pipe to verify that the impact doesn't cause a leak or other fuel system problem. Almost all fuel fill caps have a strap to prevent loss. These items are "lessons learned" following the Ford Pinto thermal problems in the 1970s. Cutting access panels to the fuel system creates a risk for fuel to spray into the vehicle in a really bad rear impact. I was rear ended twice during 2021 in construction zones on Interstates 75 and 94 when people didn't notice that traffic was stopped. Both vehicles were non-Volvos and I was lucky to not be hurt.
