Yesterday I received my "new" relay. When I went to replace it in the car, I noticed the one in use is not original: it looks the same, but does not have a Volvo logo. Upon visual inspection of the old one I could not see any cracked soldering, but difficult to see with the naked eye. I placed the new one on the car and drove around in the evening doing some errands. Towards the last evening it happened again that the car took 4 attempts to finally start. I opened this new relay and it looks a bit worse than the other one at the two welds shown in the pictures from jreed. I will take both relays to a guy to have the welds repaired, since I'm not good at this craft.

I would take some pictures of both relays, but my phone is suited for macro pictures.

Last update: after trying with up to 3 different relays, I read online about another common problem of these old Volvos that leads to a similar problem than mine: a defective antenna ring. I installed a new one 5 days ago and so far I haven't experienced the no-start problem again (knock on wood).

So, for anyone who may end up on this thread on the future: if your car does not start sometimes but it runs fine after it does, it is most likely due to a bad antenna ring than to a bad fuel pump relay.
