Retrofitting fog lights

Post by rolsen11 »

I've been thinking for a while about fitting front fog lights to my base 2000 V70 that did not come factory equipped with them. My understanding is that the car is prewired for them. I found the connectors that go to the fog lights plugged into blanks that clip to some components behind the front bumper.

Am I correct in the understanding that all I need to retrofit fog lights is the fog lights themselves, a "J" relay that plugs into a PDM under the dash, and an interior switch? I imagine the connector for the switch exists behind the blanks to the left of the steering wheel, I haven't looked in there yet to see how many pins are in the connector.

The Grey 104/108 relay does have an extra connector than stock green one. I pulled another J relay, from under dash, but don't know if its different. There is a plug behind the panel next to rear fog light switch, Plugs for fog lights are near front valance. You need special trim like the one I found in photo and of course fog lights!

I did some looking, found that my car already has the grey 104/108 relay. I ordered the fog light switch and J relay from ebay. All I need now are fog lights and those trim pieces that are sized for fogs. I'm not 100% sure how I will mount the fog lights to my bumper. I'm sure I'll need to get the aftermarket ones that come with the brackets. Not sure what hardware I need to screw the brackets to the car.

When i was pulling that stuff in the junk yard the car had what i thought was one good fog light, but turned out to have a hole in the mounting body. Anyway the body has its own metal bracket that bolts to factory holes

The v70 and XC70 have difference foglight trim pieces. They are not compatible to one another's bumpers.

For ease of compatibility, stick to the V70 or V70 XC lights depending on what your car is.

It was very easy to do this in my old 98 V70, i had to make one jumper cable to set the mode of the foglights (on off with highbeams (US SPEC) or stay on (EU SPEC)). The lights are really for looks only as they do not have that much power and are mounted very low for our vehicles.

Do you know if the lights themselves are different?

I finally received my new fog lights after ordering them a little over a month ago (they were on back order). I just installed them today and figured I should post what I did in case anyone else wants to reference it.

Here are the aftermarket lights I bought on iPD (made by Professional Parts Sweden). They came with the black brackets that my car doesn't have. I also bought yellow tint for the fog lights, because I think it's cool.

The bracket secures to the car with one sheet metal screw (threads into plastic boss on the bumper)[yellow] and two self tapping screws (threads into the two small holes in the crash bar)[red]. A power tool was needed for the self tappers to bite into the metal.

I needed to cut off this tab on each side of the car as it otherwise blocks the fog light from sitting properly.

That's pretty much it, plug in the harnesses and insert the grilles. Here are some pictures taken during and after installing them.
